At the core of my work and lived experiences, I've found a passion for working with eating disorders and body image.
Answering the essential question of "Who am I?", can be difficult in today's world. Even as the world gets "smaller", supposedly more connected, many of us still wander without passion for self-discovery. I would propose a strong sense of identity is essential to good mental health. Satisfying that question of "Who am I" must include physical and emotional presence in each moment and a strong sense of connectivity with mind, body and world. Anxiety, depression, self-esteem and trauma detach us from becoming who want we want be.

As a therapist, my mission is to deepen the conversations we have with ourselves, creating opportunities for growth. By deepening our relationships with Self, we can gain better perspective on our choices — how we got to this moment, as well as how to move forward. Through a therapeutic, strength-based partnership in a welcoming, supportive, and judgment-free environment, we will explore your potential and move toward a place of authenticity and contentment. I specialize in adults and adolescents who struggle with trauma, anxiety, depression, shame, eating disorders, body-image, parenting, marital problems and attachment issues.

I specialized in anxiety, panic, depression, school phobia, bereavement, trauma, and eating disorders.
My biggest takeaway throughout my clinical career is understanding the perplexity of mental health and how all too often, people can be misunderstood when we don’t take the time to listen. I am a strong believer in meeting the client where they are and not forcing the therapeutic process. My engagement skills revolve around maintaining flexibility and no judgement with whomever is in the room with me. It is vital to understand that our challenges don’t define us and we must value every person as an individual, not by their diagnosis, disability or trauma history.

My extensive experience working with eating disorders, depression, anxiety, trauma, and with the LGBTQ+ community help me to create a safe and compassionate environment, while challenging you to confront and overcome your obstacles.
People decide to begin therapy for a variety of reasons. Many have had painful or traumatic experiences that they are unable to move past. Some feel stuck in unhelpful thought patterns or behaviors, or struggle to find fulfillment in relationships or at work. Others may feel burdened with excessive worry, or with feelings of low self worth and inadequacy. I believe that recovery involves healing of the mind and body, and I am trained in several modalities, including CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), eating disorder treatment, and suicide prevention.

I am a Cognitive Behavioral Psychologist.I form a therapeutic partnership with my clients to determine what their goals are, and how best to achieve these goals. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, is a form of therapy whose tenet is that our thoughts cause both our feelings and our behaviors. This is an important concept because we can change the way we think so as to feel and act better, even when our external situations do not change.

You have been in therapy before and although helpful, you continue to struggle with your relationships and with your self-esteem. That nagging negative core belief (I'm not enough; I'm unlovable, etc.) you have about yourself is still there and won't go away. Past traumas (big or small) have left you feeling unsafe, unseen and misunderstood. You find you either overreact or underreact. Old thoughts/feelings, anxiety, worry, attachment issues, self-esteem or depression has you feeling stuck, and you want better for yourself and for those around you.

Relationships are essential to our survival and growth, they have the potential to be incredibly transformative and expansive or a source of seemingly never-ending grief and trauma. Sometimes we are able to use the pain to learn to do different or to protect ourselves or our loved ones. Other times, this pain can seem to be so profound that it seems to become a block, an obstacle, in the way of you and your ability to be the person you want to be versus the person you are perceived to be.

Even when we have received the ideal nurturing, secure, validating childhood, which can help us to negotiate complexities and challenges we may face later in life, our inner resources can become depleted. The capacity to find joy and comfort may elude us. Rebalancing areas of outer life, and planning steps toward change may be in order. I make time to learn about the myriad ways that using art, energetic, somatic and stress reducing therapies can help each person who comes in, to restore their inner lives as well.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
