I engage adult clients while they address life issues, changes and stressors; depression, anxiety, substance use, mental illness, social & romantic relationships, and transitions.
Our reactions to the world are influenced by our experiences. For me it’s meant transitioning from city life in Brooklyn & NYC to quieter moves upstate in the Hudson Valley; it’s meant growing from a young adult into family life & active mother of 3; and changing gears to be able to support and treat youngsters and adults in a way that best serves each of them. I've spent most of my career servicing children, teens and their families in emotional, behavioral, academic & psychiatric capacities. I've supported kids and teens through mental illness, trauma, developmental delays, learning issues,

The initial objective in therapy is to create a sense of safety where you feel deeply heard and understood. It would be an honor to guide you through your personal journey of self discovery and healing. I’m interested in working with adults of all ages, however I have a special appreciation for young adults. I love helping clients to find more meaning, purpose and balance in their lives and I believe that our mental, emotional and physical wellness are deeply intertwined.

At times clients may know what they want and we can build a plan to achieve that. Other times they may not know what they want but may know what they don't want. That's important too. It gives us the groundwork to start to develop a person centered plan to achieve their goals. Mental Health IS Health!

You feel disconnected from life & from your body. You struggle to connect in your relationships, are unhappy in your career, feel hopeless for the future or move through the world in a fog. You’ve been shamed for who you are & now you speak to yourself with harshness & can’t ever feel like enough inside your own head. You’ve been told that who you are is somehow inherently flawed. I help people increase compassion, reduce shame and feel a greater sense of belonging within themselves and their bodies.

I have practiced as a licensed therapist for 33 years. In addition to private practice, I have worked for mental health clinics and hospitals in Virginia, Indiana and Florida. Counseling/therapy is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the counselor, the client and the particular problems you are experiencing. Most persons seek counseling because they are experiencing problems which are causing pain or difficulties in their lives. It is an important decision to begin counseling. Counseling calls for the therapist's active efforts to understand the client's needs and the training to help.

Do you feel lost and alone? Do things that used to give you pleasure only add to your anxiety and sadness?  Do others not understand what you are trying to say? Do you mask your feelings in order to cope, and sometimes even detach from them altogether, when on the inside you feel frustrated, depressed, and even angry?  Are you sick and tired of feeling this way? Together, you and I will figure out what’s really going on. With me, you will be seen, heard, and believed. There is a reason for all these emotions. It’s going to be okay.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s change the pain into peace once and for all.

My belief is that you are the expert of you and your life. Therefore, we will work together to figure out what works best. I've worked in various clinical settings including mental health clinics, community-based mental health and OPWDD residential programs.

I'll work with you in developing reasonable goals, making changes for a more satisfying life. My style is personable and infused with gentle directness. We all find ourselves in situations where we struggle, become discouraged, or get "stuck". It's normal for us to, at times, be pushed to the threshold of what we may believe we are capable of managing. But whether our difficulties come to us in the form of overwhelming school or work obligations, an unhealthy relationship, or an inability to find the appropriate way to cope with a difficult emotion or painful memory, we can always find a way to not only manage, but to thrive.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
