I also have a strong interest in helping adolescents and men develop their identities.
I am interested in a transformative process that focuses on what interests you. I operate based on a wellness model; seeing clients as hu man beings who walk in seeking help, as opposed to a diagnosis needing fixing. This is all simply a hu man journey and we can all use a little guidance from time to time.

During my 40+ years 0f practice here in Chatham my approach to psychological treatment has come to be informed by a number of modalities -- psychodynamic therapy, family systems therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness meditative practice, and, most of all, by my experience working with the people who have come to me for help. Life is challenging and it is certainly not easy to be a person. We are all born with a profound need for a sense of belonging/connection and of significance/substance. Those yearnings drive us to find fulfilling love and meaningful work, which de mands constant effort and exposes us to uncertainty and loss. When losses and disappointments come in the realms of love and work and health, we are commonly subjected to debilitating, dispiriting feelings of insecurity, anxiety, and depression. If we do not handle these unbidden feelings wisely,, we may become angry in destructive ways, or we may withdraw from our responsibilities and our loves, or seek solace in drinking or drugs, or other escapist distractions that only make our lives and our painful feelings worse.

After 37 years of clinical experience, I have limited my practice to transgender-identified minors, their parents and transgender adults. Because transgender experience is not a psychopathology, my approach emphasizes assessment, case management, referrals to medical providers, education, and counseling related to transgender experience. If you want help for a minor, please know that I follow the current standards of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health. I work in a thorough, time effective manner. If the minor is seeing a therapist for a co-occurring condition I will collaborate with that provider.

Navigating life can be challenging, especially when we are dealing with emotional pain, relationship problems or addiction. At times the assistance of a therapist is needed to help regain stability. Each individual has the ability to make healthy changes to address areas they find of concern. Dealing with these life challenges on your own can be very difficult. Therapy seeks to assist us in recapturing the experience and feelings of pleasure, freedom, connection, and choice. You may believe you have tried everything, perhaps you have lost hope or don't know where to get the help you need.

Many people find that a secure attachment with a loving partner is an integral component of a meaningful life.
Welcome to my practice. I have found that developing inner resources such as curiosity, empathy and courage allows people to love more generously and to tolerate the rigors of intimacy more joyfully. These qualities naturally provide patients with new ways of dealing with life's problems, thereby reducing symptoms of distress. I believe that the process of therapy can cultivate a rich appreciation for how the past may be recreated in the present; I encourage the identification of patterns of relationships that bind people to familiar, often negative, ways of experiencing themselves and the world.

The best psychotherapy builds upon a solid relationship between a client and therapist, allowing the client to take risks in examining themselves, acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses, process painful memories and use their strengths to create change. In my therapeutic work I focus on nurturing that relationship to facilitate my client's change and self-acceptance. I am well trained in psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic therapy and family/couples therapy as well as cognitive-behavioral and short term therapy techniques and use what my clients and I believe will best facilitate their goals in treatment.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed these days, but in therapy you can find ways to bear up. I have years of experience helping people with problems in their careers or relationships, or with tough choices or life events. I work with people who feel down or anxious, who feel like their lives haven't gone in the right direction, or who have trouble believing in themselves. I listen actively, because I think therapy should be a lively, challenging discourse, and I want my patients to feel comfortable speaking up. I'm certified by the American Board of Professional Psychologists. I have a bachelor's from Harvard and a doctorate from LIU.

Often it isn't how smart we are that determines success in life but how we manage our feelings, thoughts, interpersonal interactions and behaviors that leads to accomplishing our goals.
My focus is on the treatment of children, adolescents and families. Children often present with behavior and learning challenges, anxiety, depression, stress and technology obsessions. Parents play a significant role in developing goals and strategies. I also focus on the adolescent years and work frequently with school stress, social challenges, anxiety, depression, technology inundations and athletic perfor mance. Overarching is the culture and dynamic of the families in which children and adolescents live. The goal is to feel better about our self, interact better with those in our life and develop skills to manage.

It is inevitable that our lives are consumed with daily challenges and obstacles. For each of us, our ability to manage those challenges differs; or, we settle and adapt much to the detriment of our emotional wellbeing and feeling as though there is no end in sight. Therapy provides an opportunity to examine those challenges and reframe them into a new, positive perspective. When we are able to see our way through and discover solutions to those problems from a position of strength, it can take on a whole new meaning.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
