With so many challenges facing us today, it can be overwhelming, even downright frightening, attempting to manage our emotions or life’s challenges – often both. Working through adversity helps us to discover who we are authentically and places us on a path of understanding and growth. The path can seem lonely and confusing, but I am here to assist. My ideal client is someone who has made a commitment to themselves to face their uniqueness, their circumstances, and their challenges with a new perspective. (New clients outside Central MS by virtual appointment only).

I believe in the healing power of safe relationships. I believe this because I have experienced being healed through therapeutic relationships. So many of us face the daily pain of being wounded by others, losing people we love, divorce, hating ourselves, feeling ashamed, alone, confused, or numb. We go to great lengths to manage the pain or anxiety we experience and often make wrecks of our lives and those around us. It is my desire to come along side hurting people and foster lasting growth and change. If you can relate to this, Welcome!

I work with children, adolescents, young adults and adults to help them work through anger, trauma, depression, anxiety, and adjustment related to life transitions. My goal is that the client takes away better, more effective coping skills to improve their overall functioning. I implement various play therapy techniques to help children express and learn to cope with challenges, in their own language-play. I encourage both children and adults to identify goals to improve their overall quality of life and relationships.

Life gets hard for all of us at times and sometimes we just need help finding our way back to our true self. I love working with people and helping them find their own inner strength and establishing a loving relationship with themselves. This is what brings us back to understanding how precious and uniquely God made each of us. Out of this comes the return of joy and beginning of relationships with others in more healthy ways.

There are challenges in everyone’s life that can seem daunting. At such times, an experienced guide to assist us in identifying the thoughts and feelings associated with our current difficulties can be beneficial. We all have within us the capacity to be our best selves and live fulfilling lives. We carry with us our unique combination of genetics, upbringing, and life experiences which impact our interactions with ourselves and others. While employing efforts to get our needs met, attain happiness, and create satisfying connections with others, we may find ourselves engaging in ineffective and counterproductive behaviors.

Hi! My name is Mary Beth Harbin. As a woman acquainted with hurting but also healing, I am willing to navigate dark places with clients while offering the hope of renewed strength and lasting victory. I consider counseling a sacred invitation into the hurts and hopes of those I counsel; therefore, I deem individuals who seek my counseling services to be most courageous as they choose to share the most intimate snapshots of their lives, relationships, and vulnerabilities with me. In exchange, clients can expect a safe and non-judgmental environment for healing and restoration to take place.

We are a Husband and Wife team who have the tools available to change your life. The form of therapy we use is different than your ordinary "talk therapy." Everything is done in action through techniques such as role play, double, role reversal, soliloquy, and scene setting. We specialize in helping people who struggle with RELATIONAL TRAUMA. Relational trauma is the experience of repeated neglect, abuse, bullying, or other type of behavior that causes lasting psychological harm. It's usually perpetrated by a family member or other close loved one, and the repercussions are chronic and severe.

I recognize that making the decision to contact a therapist is difficult for some therefore, my goal is to make the process as comfortable as possible. I work in a relaxed, informal manner that is collaborative in nature. I often use humor in my therapy sessions and take every possible measure to ensure that my office is a safe place for clients to freely cry or express anger as they need. Finally, I work from an integrative perspective that draws from a variety of theoretical approaches as I tailor my approach to the needs and preferences of my clients.

Worry. Stress. Racing thoughts. Anxiety. These are words my clients use to describe their every day life. Anxiety grabs a hold of a person's life in overwhelming ways. "What if?" questions constantly pop in your head. Worst case scenario is the only scenario you can see. When you put your head on your pillow your mind keeps racing about tomorrow, the day after that, and the day after that. Maybe your anxiety even leads to panic attacks. If this sounds like you, welcome to the club! Millions of people struggle with these issues. If you want to reset your life from the overwhelming nature of anxiety it is possible!

You feel overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed out. There’s at least one area of your life where you experience thoughts like “I’m not good enough" or "I'm a failure." These thoughts might be in the background all the time or they might only pop up sometimes (spending time around certain people, going home to visit family, working another day in that job you hate, or when bad memories get stuck on a repeating loop). Whatever it is that triggers these thoughts, they make you feel awful.

Most any therapist will tell you that they prefer seeing clients who are motivated to change. Clients presenting as "depressed" often express little or no hope. Clients with anxiety have difficulty seeing stressful situations as manageable. Couples often present with one or both doubting that the marriage can survive. I believe all clients have incredible inherent God-given resources to effect positive change. Likewise, I believe marriages are salvageable, if couples are willing to work, to be vulnerable, to accept, and to understand that the greatest expression of love is to fully know and to be known.

If you are here looking for help, there is no doubt that you are overwhelmed with all the names. How do you choose? Keep in mind that the relationship is the most important aspect of counseling. Feel free to call and discuss what you are experiencing and see if we can develop a positive and productive therapeutic relationship. My experience as a licensed professional counselor prior to private practice is built around community mental health and home-based/inpatient level of care services.

How can I find a therapist in Rankin County?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
