I have particular expertise in addressing trauma, depression, anxiety, substance use, and adjustment difficulties.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in providing quality, informed psychotherapy as well as diagnostic assessment. It is truly amazing how life changing the therapy process can be, and I am committed to working in a genuine and collaborative way in order to help people through their path of recovery. I help people achieve symptom relief but also get to the root source of the problem for lasting positive change and improved life satisfaction.

Many of us have unknowingly rejected or silenced parts of ourselves that don’t fit with our idea of who we are supposed to be. As a result, life can feel out of balance or even inauthentic. My hope is to create a safe and accepting space for you to feel empowered to implement positive changes in your life. I work with individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety and worry, substance use, stress, trauma, abuse, anger, fear, grief and loss, guilt and shame, and other challenges. I also work with couples who are having difficulty connecting and experiencing issues related to trust, intimacy, and affection.

I work with individuals who are seeking depth in their lives and in their therapy. I have worked with medical professionals, social workers, and psychotherapists; artists and writers; professors, clergy, and community organizers, and folks struggling with inhibition, trauma, depression, or anxiety. A common thread is a recognition that we all need support identifying our blind spots, and that increased understanding and self-awareness can lead to an increased sense of agency, self-compassion, and purpose in our lives.

I enjoy working with clients surrounding substance use, trauma, LGBTQ+-identity exploration and specific issues, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and more.
Part of being human is the inevitability of encountering difficulty. Most of us accept this quite easily, but it is harder for us to accept *ourselves* while we face that difficulty! So many of our experiences in our families and our culture train us to ignore or get rid of our emotions, so space or compassion for ourselves seem next to impossible. Together and with mutual vulnerability and creativity, my heartfelt wish is to effectively nurture and challenge you, and to help you discover resources within and without to meet your experiences with strength, clarity, and hope.

I have extensive experience in mental health treatment, including substance use disorder.
Sometimes life can send us down a path that we never expected to be on. Often the unexpected path can leave us feeling lost, isolated, and hopeless. Whatever it is that started you down this path, know you do not have to walk alone. I utilize a collaborative approach to help clients move along this unexpected path and overcome challenges along the way. The true joy is seeing clients recognize that while this path isn't one they would have set out on their own, there are truly beautiful steps taken on their journey to healing.

Each of us has a unique history that shapes how we make sense of our inner and outer world. I have over 15 years of experience working in mental health with diverse clients who have a variety of concerns they bring to our relationship. Some of the typical issues that I have helped clients address include depression, anxiety, mania, trauma histories, and substance use. In addition, I have a personal passion working with clients who are exploring their gender identity and/or sexuality. Often because of the concerns that my clients bring up, I help people with life changes, career questions, self-esteem, and relationship issues.

I believe that in order to effectively navigate relationships, whether at home, in the workplace, or within the community, it is essential to understand and address the dynamics of the larger systems at play. By taking a holistic and systemic approach to therapy, I work collaboratively with clients to empower them to put their 'oxygen mask' on first and foster healthier relationships within the context of their unique systems.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
