In order to get the most out of therapy there needs to be clear, defined goals that are built out of trust between the client and the therapist. What do you want out of therapy and why? After a period of time your goals and needs as a client can change based on the progress made throughout therapy. I believe a good therapist will, "work themselves out of a job". This means that we will work towards self-sufficiency where you don't need therapy and you are the best version of yourself, no matter how long it takes. When working with clients, I stand by the phrase, "whatever the client brings, I will work with". Whatever issue or concern that is presented to me, I will help meet the needs to the best of my ability. In terms of specialty, I am primarily focused on relationship issues, which consists of couples work, sex issues, infidelity, adjustment issues, and so on.

People enter into a counseling relationship when nothing else seems to be working. Although most people soon make comments such as, “(Counseling) was a lot better than I thought it would be”, few people seek counseling as a first option. More often we seek out techniques that either help us to temporarily avoid (e.g., media, social networking) our anxiety, or we seek temporary shots of pleasure (e.g., alcohol, food, pornography) that make us feel good for a short time. Soon enough we realize that all of these things leave us feeling more hollow and lonely, and that is when we start thinking about counseling.

I am a Licensed Psychologist and the Clinical Director of Sollars and Associates Integrative Counseling and Psychological Services. I have been providing counseling and psychotherapy for over 30 years in the Metro Detroit area and our group practice spans across the state of Michigan. Our group is trained in dealing with a variety of issues including: Attention Deficit Disorder, School Difficulties, Interpersonal Issues such as bullying, adult ADD and related issues, Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Mood Disorders, Grief and Loss, Parenting, Educational Concerns, Relationship Concerns, Career and Work Issues, and Sexual Issues.

My personal theoretical foundation is not limited to one approach. I believe it is necessary for counselors to be adaptive. Every client is different and our responses and approaches should be equally diverse. One person may need a cognitive behavioral approach whereas another would be more responsive to brief counseling. This eclectic approach will be applied to all clients. Techniques will vary between clients to best meet the individual client's needs.

The relationship between client and clinician is a key component of treatment efficacy.
