Specialties: men's issues, trauma and couples.
I've worked in the mental health field since 2000 with various populations (individuals, couples and families), however, my specialties include men's studies, pornography/sexual addiction, relationship health for married couples & EMDR. I especially find men experience challenges in life and lack the means or opportunities to be supported, validated heard. I strive to be practical and direct, yet effective in fostering change. Whether guiding couples in marriage prep or in marital strain, I develop understanding of relationships, creating an open, honest and safe communication style which fosters intimacy through challenges.

My approach to therapy is collaborative. We may work with a variety of issues that include anxiety and depression, grief, end of life issues, chronic illness and pain, existential crises, men's issues, and relationship difficulties. Alongside therapy, my work has helped give me a perspective that addresses every stage of life and its challenges. We can approach such challenges together, ranging from young adulthood through those near the end of life. It's always an honor to accompany people on a journey of self-discovery and who have taken this first brave step toward healing. I would be honored to take it with you.

I believe we can all agree that we want to have happy, healthy, and satisfying lives. Unfortunately, sometimes obstacles hinder us from achieving the outcomes we desire. Whether it be anxiety, depression, intrusive ruminating thoughts, or alcohol/substance abuse, mental illness is REAL and can affect anyone. If you are struggling; however, have the motivation to collaborate, identify your needs and goals then let us (together) get to work.

We're all doing the best we can with what we have to work with. However, life is always changing, and the tools we were given in the past, may not be working for us in the present. Counseling can act as a software update for your mind, clearing out old ideas, unprocessed emotion, and beliefs, that are holding you back from reaching your goals. I use EMDR therapy and other evidence-based modalities in my work. If you want to live your life more than think about it, and if you want your past to stop showing up uninvited in the present; then you may benefit from this unique, innovative, and holistic form of therapy.

Feeling anxious all the time is such a crippling feeling and can feel like there is no escaping it. Just when one anxious thought starts to go away, another one shows up and takes its place. It can feel like an endless cycle of racing thoughts, worry, and fear about anything and everything. It’s hard to know when the anxiety will be over especially living in an anxiety-inducing world that is constantly changing which in turn leads to more anxiety. If this sounds like you, you're not alone!

Trauma affects many, if not all of us, and recovery from the impact of these experiences is a journey. In therapy, my focus is to establish a strong therapeutic relationship where healing can take place. Once trust is developed, the goal is to empower individuals to increase their sense of safety and control, and to cope with traumatic experiences. My wish is for individuals to be able to reengage in their lives and pursue their greatest hopes for themselves, without the traumatic experiences hindering their ability to do so.

If you have been having a challenging time with a new situation or want to change something that you have been experiencing for a while now, counseling can help. The need to work on accepting and affirming ourselves for who we are, managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and traumatic experiences, family & relationship difficulties, improving our self-esteem, navigating today's stressful world, and managing work/career issues are part of many people's experience at one time or another. I believe we all have the ability to improve our health and lives.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
