My grounding in marriage and family therapy means that even when I’m working with an individual, I take a holistic approach to understanding the source of problems and to finding solutions.
Currently accepting individuals only for daytime teletherapy appointments. Connection is everything, isn’t it? For better or for worse, we shape and are shaped by the people in our lives. Oftentimes our problems are more than just “in our heads” - they arise from our relationships to ourselves and others. Whether you have challenges in a current relationship – a parent, kid, partner, friend, or yourself – or if you’re struggling to make sense of hurtful relationships from your past, let’s help you get to the bottom of what is holding you back.

I have worked extensively with women and men in helping to manage marital conflict, work / family balance, the challenges presented by advancement and retirement, and developing effective workplace behavior.
For the last 30 years of my 40 years in practice, I have had a special interest and focus on conflict management. I have worked closely with colleagues in the private sector and the courts to develop programs and relationships that effectively assist those having difficulty managing their behavior in their interactions with others. Out of this has come my current focus on individual and couples counseling, anger management, and my commitment to change-oriented treatment techniques associated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). My approach is low on pretense; high on listening, feedback and direction.

My practice focuses on adults, premarital and marital couples, those in ministry or church leadership and their families, those experiencing life transitions, grief, anxiety, depression, or relational concerns.
When pain overwhelms joys; when core longings for love, acceptance, respect, safety, and significance are met with rejection, betrayal, loss, and questioning; when depression, anxiety, confusion, and conflicts drain us, we long for hope that relief and change are possible. We want to know that we're not alone in our struggles.

Melissa obtained a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with minor in Sociology and a Master's in Human Development and Family Studies with a specialization in Marital and Family Therapy from the University of Rhode Island.
It is a common myth that if you are with the right partner, you will never have conflict, or not experience problems in a relationship. The reality is that relationships will have rocky times and even times of doubt. Couples, when they enter into a relationship, don't fuse into one person, each becoming the "better half" of the other. They remain individuals who merge lives. This comes with its own problems and pains because it's not always an easy thing to do. As a couple's therapist, my goal is to help couples navigate and resolve issues.

Often times , despite one’s accomplishments and successes one can still feel weighed down by a negative view of themselves, feel incompetent and like an imposter. Where does this negative view come from and why can’t we feel better about ourselves? Exploring where it comes from and understanding how we internalized others negative feelings about themselves and or others projecting their own negative feelings about themselves onto us can put these feelings into perspective and allow for the space to see ourselves realistically.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
