I have a strong background with topics such as aging, sexuality, death, trauma, and existential questions of meaning, purpose, and relatedness.
I work best with clients who are eager to understand themselves, their partner(s), and the world with increasing depth and clarity. Maybe you want a lot more out of life, but find certain habits and challenges keep getting in the way. I will help to reveal and release these old patterns so you can find more fulfilling ways of living and relating. 2023: I am currently accepting clients for sex therapy and/or relationship counseling only. I can help with communication, consensual non-monogamies, kink interests, gender identity, aging, disability, desire discrepancy, sexual fulfillment, shame, the impact of trauma, and more.

I use a client centered, humanist/existential style to explore current distress while integrating behavioral interventions (TF-CBT, DBT) and classic insight oriented exploration.
Life is difficult. Unless you are an old soul, choices surrounding identity, self worth and acceptance, relationships/finding connection, and career choice are often painful and confusing. Even in the best of circumstances and family support, we are left with well meaning advice and our own limited self-understanding to guide choices that will affect the next season of life. I have over a decade of experience in residential and college counseling settings helping clients to explore their past to understand the motivations and traumas that led then to where they are and what if anything they want to change going forward.

Anxiety, depression, chronic pain and illness, grief, losses (spouses, children, parents, pets), substance struggles, aging, relationship struggles, ADHD, OCD, traumas, LGBT issues, existential issues, spiritual growth.
There is no real ‘cure’ for being a human being. But in therapy, there can be support, exploration and development of skills that let us live a more meaningful and manageable life. Perspective of another, more objective person, can help. When you are in the movie, you can't watch it.

Whether this pattern is an addictive process or substance, difficulty with relationships or intimacy, family conflict, habitual anger, or free-floating existential angst, psychotherapy can help identify the root causes of distress and facilitate the process of change.
“The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are.”--Unknown The decision to seek help is one that is often arrived at after long periods of suffering. We so often cling to what is familiar, even when what is familiar is causing us and those around us tremendous pain. We go to great lengths to avoid coming face to face with our vulnerability, and unknowingly prolong our suffering despite our best efforts to master it. For many of us, we simply do what we know, choosing the familiarity of pain over the inherently fear-inducing path of change. Simply stated--change is hard. While change is inevitably challenging, it does not have to be undertaken alone. Finding a qualified therapist to support you through this process can make a significant difference in both the outcome and the process.

I believe strongly in forming a warm and collaborative relationship and tailoring my approach to your needs and goals. Since no two clients are the same, I am very flexible in my approach. Depending on your struggles, goals, and needs, I might be highly directive or non-directive, always providing a safe space to work through your thinking and emotions. I am eclectic in my work, meaning I draw from many techniques/orientations including cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and existential therapy. My first goal is always to develop a collaborative relationship, as I consider us partners in this process.

I enjoy using a blend of therapy approaches tailored to the needs of each of my individual clients. I am a firm believer of meeting a person where they're at while helping them understand themselves and the world around them. Whether it's processing emotions, providing education and support, helping those understand the impact of trauma, learning new and practical skills or whether it's providing practical and pragmatic advice - all of these are important in treating my clients as a whole. I truly believe that I can be of help to anyone who is willing to move towards self-understanding and overall wellness.

For me, psychotherapy must address the needs of the person. Sometimes this can mean exploring how you got to the point you are at, and how you want to change; and sometimes you may want specific tools to address a very specific issue. Finding the right therapist is perhaps one of the most important choices you will make and also one of the most difficult. Although a therapist may have an armory of techniques to use, what I have found to be at the heart of any type of psychotherapy is whether the relationship works between you and your therapist.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
