Working with adults (individuals, couples, groups), my approach can be especially helpful when going through any major life transitions that bring grief and loss -- a death, divorce, addiction, career and role changes, or life-threatening illness.
Feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, stressed to the max? Do your days seem like nothing but "to do lists," "musts" and "shoulds?" The enormous stress of just trying to survive often leads to anxiety, depression, relational problems, work frustrations and all types of addictions. Finding life balance and satisfaction can be challenging, but it is possible. I offer a counseling process to help you identify what you most want in your life, what needs to change to get there, and how you can make changes in creative ways.

I work with kids, adults, families, couples, parents and co-parents, those separated or recovering from divorce, and non-traditional and adoptive families.
Are you struggling with relationships? Does it seem like it should be easier to connect with those we are related to, those we choose to be with, those we work with and those we parent? How do we address unhealthy relationships, or unhealthy parts of relationships? How do we make better choices going forward? You are not alone. I often work with those who have had difficulty or trauma in relationships, and who want to heal and create change. Validation is a key component of my therapy. I want to truly see, know and appreciate the real you and your feelings. Integrity, self-responsibility and empowerment are goals.

Issues I work with include divorce/breakups, contemplating divorce, other relationship issues.
I specialize in working with clients who have had difficulty connecting with a previous therapist, perhaps had a bad first experience or maybe new to therapy and afraid they won't feel comfortable. I pride myself on making everyone who comes through the door feel welcome and at ease. No pressure - regardless of what you are coming to therapy to address, it is most important that I "get" you. The work and your progress unfolds from there. We will work together to look at what's holding you back and how you can move forward.

I treat a wide range of issues that include anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, mood disorders, divorce, blended families, life transitions, grief, stress management, women's, men's issues.
I have more than 20 years of experience, specializing in couples therapy, and working with individuals and families. Couples will learn more effective proven communication techniques, how to remove negativity from their relationships, and gain a better understanding of self-defeating behaviors. Couples move toward conscious connection as they come to understand each other better. They have more compassion as their defenses drop, and intimacy grows deeper, both emotionally and sexually.

I've been in private practice for 34 years. I've had extensive training in both theoretical and didactic psychotherapy. An important part of my training was my own work and research in understanding myself and my marriage and other important relationships. This is why I think I am so confident at being both a couples therapist and an individual therapist. I believe this is primarily an educational process or a re-educational process.

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
