She specializes in anxiety, attachment, trauma but provides support for a wide range of concerns. I offer 60 and 90 minute sessions, and specialize in half day trauma therapy intensives. A therapy intensive is an efficient and comprehensive pathway to heal trauma in consecutive days instead of over many years in weekly therapy, and can accelerate symptom relief. I utilize evidence-informed modalities such as EMDR, Progressive Counting, the Flash technique, and Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment to effectively heal the roots of distressing emotions and negative beliefs stored within traumatic memories.

Having worked in a variety of settings like inpatient and outpatient hospital programs, public schools, and private practice helped me appreciate the uniqueness of the human psyche. In today's world predicament more than ever I am aware of the enormous need for a secure space in which you can regain access to your authentic self and allow it to guide you through your everyday life. Being in touch with your authentic self holds the key to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Having been in practice as a psychologist for more than 30 years, I am convinced that change and growth take place within the safety and warmth of a truly understanding, and collaborative relationship. It has been a privilege to do this work and I am grateful for the opportunity to bear witness and contribute to my patients' lives. Our journeys are often complicated and demanding with places along the way that can be overwhelming, painful and confusing. Awareness and willingness to seek help when you are at an impasse is perhaps the most important step in the process of psychotherapy.

Perhaps you are a self-sufficient person who is used to making it on your own, but there is so, so much you are asked to hold right now. You may notice that in the strain in your relationships, in your unexpected emotional reactions, and in your body. There can be an overwhelming gap between the life and relationships you hope to have and your day-to-day reality. I offer a way forward through couples therapy and individual therapy that is informed by rich training and experience while honoring your depth, complexity and uniqueness.

Psychotherapy, as I define it to my patients and students, is the collaborative inquiry between patient and therapist into the patient's patterns of interaction and patterns of expectation. This kind of study leads to greater personal and interpersonal freedom, which allows for the reduction or the elimination of symptoms. Psychotherapy can be of brief duration or an extended enterprise focusing on long term difficulties. The decision on which form of psychotherapy to undertake is usually based on an evaluation of 1 to 3 sessions, where a treatment plan is developed. I am interactive in my approach.

*PRACTICE CURRENTLY FULL* I am an experienced, licensed psychologist in private practice, and on faculty at Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis. I work with adults and older adolescents struggling with depression, anxiety, and relationship problems. I never underestimate the complexities of the mind, personality, and the unconscious dynamics inherent in relationships. At the same time, I feel psychotherapy should be practical. I have a thoughtful, compassionate style in addressing the roots of repetitive distress, while keeping in mind that such work must also ameliorate more immediate distress.

Entering therapy shows motivation to heal and grow often at a time when one feels most vulnerable. My approach is one of warmth and respect. I try to create an environment where clients feel free to discuss any problem. While I believe our past experiences inform our present life, I do not believe they define us. Difficult symptoms are often ways we have found to best manage painful emotions, thoughts and body sensations. Unfortunately, 'symptoms' occur when our 'solutions' for managing thoughts and feelings are no longer working for us. I strive to help clients find solutions that work better for them.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
