I've been a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC), and a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) for almost twenty years. I work with individuals, couples, and families out of the basement office of my home in Arlington, MA. My most basic therapeutic approach is that everyone is born good and whole. But, life happens and it sends us difficulties that we can’t always understand or handle. These difficulties can happen as children, adolescents, adults, in school, home, work, and in our marriages. Sometimes these problematic life experiences can affect our core beliefs negatively and/or overwhelm our abilities to cope.

My primary modalities are Internal Family Systems therapy, and Mindfulness, Acceptance and Self Compassion.
I have several decades of experience providing therapy to people from many walks of life. My overall goal is to provide you with the opportunity to be heard, so that you can move forward with more joy and less pain. You may feel fragmented and want to heal, or out of sorts and want to sort it out. Perhaps you want to achieve a sense of wellness and well-being. It is my honor to build trust at your pace, so that we can walk together in partnership on this journey. We will work to allow your strengths, your sorrows and your joys to build toward inner wholeness with courage, self compassion and clarity.

Therapy is a process of working together to help you experience new ways of generating hope and inspiration for your life. As we understand the dilemmas you face, I'll help you see how you can use your creative abilities to develop new choices for meeting them and explore new paths toward change. In my work with individuals, couples and families I offer a framework for keeping track of important ideas, meaningful life stories and useful directions. I integrate ideas from family systems and narrative therapies and phase-oriented trauma recovery.

I see patients searching for meaning and fulfillment in their lives, or wrestling with existential issues of loneliness, a sense of loss or mild to profound disconnection. Sometimes this coincides with anxiety, depression, trauma, difficulty relating to others, or a lack of comfort living in their own body.

Change is hard. And change within ourselves is even harder. Therapy can help with finding answers. It can be a place to explore barriers and challenges to living fully into the life you want. Therapy can help with identifying patterns in our lives, both good ones and bad, with recognizing our strengths, and with where we struggle. Therapy can be a place where we can find our way back to who we really are, supporting our hopes, dreams, values and strengths in living into our lives fully.

Therapy should be a life-affirming experience where you can feel heard, valued, and supported as you share your hopes and struggles. I provide psychotherapy to adults living with anxiety, depression, psychosis-spectrum disorders, and those going through any big life change. I especially love helping new parents with the difficulties that can coincide with pregnancy and postpartum. As a former tenure-track professor, I also enjoy working with people experiencing similar high-stress work environments.

I am a "generalist" and clinically serve individuals, couples and families across all phases of development (from pre-teens and adolescents through to older adults). Psychotherapy is a process designed to increase general mental health and well-being by clarifying goals and values, strengthening psychological weaknesses, and learning more effective and sophisticated strategies to better manage emotional, social and internal (e.g. thoughts) life. Through a gentle but focused conversational style, I utilize the latest clinical research and theory to construct a collaborative and personally-tailored treatment plan that aims for symptom relief and performance enhancement.

I have been a child & adolescent therapist for 49yrs., & I enjoy my work greatly. I also work with parents who want advice and guidance about parenting skills. Children can change much faster than adults, and that is why I love working with young people. I try to support their strengths, encourage their creativity, relate to them with warmth and humor. I also work with parents with children, and with parents with teens if teens want me to. I like the challenge of connecting with both children and teens, ages 4 to 20. Connecting requires intuition and open-heartedness.

It can be challenging and scary to seek counseling and to take the first steps toward desired change. Being aware of that, Latrese is grateful and eager about the opportunity to meet people where they are and to help them get to where they want to be.

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
