Growth is beautiful, although at times, it’s not pretty. I’m here to support you through this process, tap into your intrinsic ability to heal, and achieve your full potential. My clients are adults and adolescents who are tired of feeling mentorless, stuck, or afraid of failure and want to change their lives. Whether they’re dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, or grief, I work with clients in a relational, experiential way to engage their intrinsic capacity to heal. Your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are asking you to slow down and nurture your internal world.

If you feel something in your life needs to change but aren't sure what, you’re not alone. You might have ideas about what you need and you’re ready for action, but you’re not sure where/how to start. You’re probably tired at this point – tired of feeling distracted, worried, frustrated, or sad. You’re ready to overcome the feelings and thoughts that brought you here. The good news is you’ve already started: you’re reading this, which means you’re closer to finding relief, growth, and strength. Together we’ll face your problems; you’ll learn new ways of thinking and feeling that help you tame your emotions, rather than obey them.

Psychotherapy is simultaneously one of the most difficult and most rewarding things one can do. Honestly confronting the patterns of thinking, feeling, and behavior that maintain the life you have and understanding the roots of your values, beliefs, and desires can be hard work, but it is also the best way to break old habits and start to live a life you want to live. People often report repeating behaviors that feel natural to them but that result in the same painful outcomes: dating the same type of partner, getting into the same arguments, feeling the same anxiety or ambient-sadness.

Learning to accept yourself as you are is an important part of growth and healing. In our work together, I will listen and support you, in gaining new insights on what you are experiencing in your day to day. Past trauma and current difficult circumstances do not define you. You are a unique person. Therapy is a place where you can reflect on your lived experiences with dignity, and find inner courage that empowers you to continue on.

Sometimes people seek therapy because of painful situations, or they're unclear about which path to take. Sometimes they're trying to overcome the effects of a difficult childhood. And sometimes they have a more biological problem - ADD, depression, mood swings - and want to lead a rich and satisfying life despite these problems. I will help you to figure out the source of your problems, and find solutions. For twenty-four years I've worked with a wide range of patients with a variety of issues. I've taught Psychology at Smith College, and graduate students and candidates at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center.

As a therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
