Everyone else is making progress in life while you’re standing still. Painful reminders sit like a suffocating weight on your chest, preventing you from taking action. The nagging voice in your head never lets up. “You’re not good enough. Just give up already.” The worst part is you’re starting to believe it. You don’t feel worthy of love, so you settle for unfulfilling relationships. You’re so stuck in the past that it’s impossible to focus on the future. There must be more to life than this! You know that something needs to change.

Offering Telehealth Therapy in Colorado, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Texas. My passion is to help people in need as effectively as possible. Most of us in the field have a story and mine is one that compels me to be an encourager of others in the midst of emotional, relational and psychological pain. Through three decades of study in Psychology and Theology, I have come to a deep appreciation of both traditions and disciplines. Therapy is a collaborative endeavor between the client, God, and me...and each one is vital for the desired outcome.

I love to help families, couples, and individuals as they navigate conflict, communication difficulties, anxiety, and life-transitions. I have personal experience with inter-cultural relationships and military families. I recognize that we are the product of many influences including the families and cultures we come from, relationships we choose to enter, circumstances and choices we make, etc. When you begin to understand where you come from and who you are, it helps you move in the direction you want to go. It’s my pleasure to walk beside you on your journey as you move toward healing, wholeness, and happiness.

The relationships in our lives are often the most important thing to us and when they aren't going well it's easy to feel stuck. Stuck fighting over the same things, stuck feeling like your needs aren't being met, and stuck feeling lonely and depressed. This can leave us feeling overwhelmed and longing for connection. When life and our relationships get difficult to manage that's when therapy can help.

The work at our group practice, Better Lives Building Tribes, focuses on that complex point, at which, individuals intersect with another. Through intimate/romantic relationships, friendships, partnerships, families, and organizations that we are surrounded by, we learn where individual strengths and weaknesses are. Through that knowledge and understanding, we work with people to discover creative means of closing the gap between where people are right now and where they would ideally like to be.

Let's face it, life can be a rollercoaster of opposites: good and bad, easy and hard, fulfilling and empty. Trying to make changes on your own can feel overwhelming and difficult to start. I love working with clients who are ready for positive change and want to work hard for themselves.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
