Often we are struggling and are unsure of why or what we can do about it. This can lead us to feel hopeless and helpless and often sets us up for additional worry and sadness. Assessment is a tool used to identify the cause of such struggles as well as your unique strengths that can support positive change.

I have been assisting individuals, couples, groups and families coping with the difficulties that accompany Substance Abuse/Dependence, Dual-Diagnosis, Narcissistic Abuse Recovery and relationship difficulties for over 20 years. I have learned that what we usually find beneath these presenting behaviors can be a mix of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, betrayal, trauma and stress. This is what creates unmanageability. Together we will design healthy coping skills and increase personal insight in order to create awareness, facilitate change and restore manageability.

You are reading these words for a reason: You want to make a change and you're not sure how. Perhaps you feel socially inept and terrified of judgement or rejection. Or you feel alone and disconnected, unable to communicate effectively with the people you love most. Or you feel at odds with your body and dependent on food rituals surrounded by secrecy and shame. The human mind is wonderfully creative and adaptive. Your symptoms are valid responses to internal and environmental circumstances. In therapy, we can hold and heal your experience together.

The past several years have been challenging; both individually and collectively we have endured varied levels of trauma. Combine that with the struggles we were carrying pre-pandemic and it can sometimes feel impossible to properly address any of it. So many of us are feeling stuck, questioning our core beliefs, resulting in negative thought patterns and problematic behaviors. Allow me to help you untangle the problems and stress you are facing. It is not always easy asking for help, but one of my inherent values is that there is immense courage and resilience behind our ability to do so.

Dani has a compassionate and client centered style when working with patients. A metaphor of Dani’s style is that she is the coach while the patient is the player on the field; she can tell you what the play looks like, however she cannot do the work when you are out on the field. What she values in her clients is an openness to the therapeutic experience, curiosity and a yearning to know more about themselves and what they find beneficial. While using a touch of humor to build rapport, Dani can help her patients gain new perspectives which will empower them to make changes in their life.

An ideal client is someone who is willing to put in the difficult work of self-exploration with the intention of it leading to personal self-growth. A huge misconception of a therapist is one who gives advice, but in reality, I work to guide my client towards their own self-discovery and therefore being patient and having an open-mind is necessary for all clients.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
