Now, more than ever, people are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and uncertain about how to manage their relationships, careers, and lives. I have over 15 years of experience working with mental illness and substance abuse and have been providing individual, couples, and family therapy to adults, adolescents and children for many years.
I believe that therapy is most effective when an individual recognizes the need for some kind of change in their lives. It is then the role of the therapist to join with them on their journey for personal growth. Whether the issues are due to personal relationships, mental illness, alcohol or chemical addictions, trauma, or of another nature, I will be able to assist you in setting goals, changing your thinking, and helping you to make your life better, one step at a time.

'Hearing with understanding is perhaps the better part of wisdom.' (-R. Lawhead). Each of us is on a personal journey. The goal is to stay on our path, nurturing and connecting to our wholeness and sense of self. When learned behaviors work against our desires we often become frustrated and depleted leaving little to give to ourself and others. Our situations are always unique, whether we are faced with depression, anxiety, couple or family problems, loss, parent-child issues, or transitional life challenges. A supportive therapeutic relationship can be a wonderful way to rediscover inner strength and regain perspective.

Whatever the challenge, using a variety of therapeutic techniques and theories, and just some plain old talking things through, we can work to help you, your child, your family, or other loved ones successfully achieve goals, conquer challenges, challenge negative thinking and develop healthy coping skills.
Whether children, adolescents, or adults, we all have life challenges that need to be addressed: from the difficulties of navigating family requirements, needs, and dynamics to the stress associated with succeeding at school, work, or other areas. These can bring on depression, anxiety, acting out behaviors, relationship troubles and loss issues. Other times, we face challenges of our own making and need to learn how to adjust our behaviors and thought patterns. Sometimes, we just need to learn how to handle changes we were not expecting, or those we've been hoping not to have to face.

I specialize in: codependency, infidelity, family substance use recovery, compulsive eating behavior, and family members of substance users/narcissists/borderline personality/abuse.
The unfolding nature of our lives is a sacred journey and can be trusted. When we know how to listen, engage and trust the wisdom of our own lives, journeys and hearts, we become more ourselves. I view therapy as a process of learning to listen and live life more authentically, from our inner GPS, rather than from others telling us who we are, who we should be and what to think/do/etc. This process is key to life satisfaction as we become the person we were meant to be.

I've trained in Functional Family Therapy which is a strength-based approach to viewing the family as a whole and seeing that all members serve a purpose in the family, not blaming the parent or child, while improving communication and relationships.
Are you thriving or surviving in your life? Sometimes it can be difficult to cope with life's challenges and it's difficult to communicate emotions, thoughts and feelings. I can help deal with these issues by listening without judgement and help you, your child, spouse, family member or friend cope with them on a daily basis so that you can thrive in your life. I have been working with children, adolescents, families and adult for 13 years.

I am best able to assist those who struggle with competitive relationships, and feelings of being on the losing side in their interactions with those they love. I have seen couples, individuals, and entire families struggling with attempts to force one another to 'win' arguments, only to find that they never seem to go away fully. Many times, other issues such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction or substance abuse becomes the main issue which families show to others the competitive nature which occurs within the family system, and are most concerned when they call for an initial session.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
