This group is not necessarily about making you stop using unless that is or will become your goal. Maybe you are curious about how your life would be without it or having a different relationship with your usage. Marijuana, Alcohol, and Substances can impact and limit the relationship you have with yourself and others. The aim is to explore usage, destigmatize thoughts and feelings, and incorporate a new relationship with the substance into your lives without judgment or blame.

My clinical experience has given me the tools to help you tackle whatever is standing in the way of your happiness. I am trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and DBT Prolonged Exposure. Both modalities have been found to be effective in treating PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, emotion dysregulation, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and more. Through DBT, I am able to assist my clients in creating a Life Worth Living. Together, we can mindfully tackle the problems that are getting in your way by learning the tools that will help you handle and overcome them.

I work with clients to address a wide range of concerns that cause personal distress, which can be experienced as feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and depressed. Moments of distress may also be marked by interpersonal difficulties with others, including family, friends, co-workers and partners, which can also be explored in therapy. In my work with couples, I carefully attune to each person's needs, as well as, to the couple as a whole. I also work with clients to pinpoint areas of communication that can be strengthened, developing stronger communication abilities that can positively affect other life areas as well.

Trauma is linked to anxiety, depression, and relationship problems (Bessel, 2021). We tend to think that trauma only happens to war veterans or victims of assault. However, being raised in an unpredictable home, difficult relationship with parents, or exposed to stress etc. can have a life-long impact. People can feel hesitant about seeking treatment for trauma because it can open a door to feeling overwhelmed. However, this is not the case with the therapy I provide, Somatic Experiencing, a therapy that takes years to be trained on.

Trauma is the inability to be in the present. Trauma therapy is not about understanding what happened, in fact talking about it can be retraumatizing (Bessel 2020). Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk is a world-renowned trauma research and author of “The Body Keeps the Score”, a New York Times bestseller for years.

My undergraduate degree and master's degree are from Boston College. I have had clients as young as two and as old as 87! I’ve worked with all ages in outpatient. My focus was children/families in partial hospitalization and in-home. I’ve primarily supported those finding challenges with anxiety, sadness, and anger. I am passionate about how physical health intertwines with mental health. Therefore I nourish my body with plants and move every day! I have found joy as a boxing instructor and runner. I hope to expose myself to more cultures through travel.

We might feel overwhelmed by nervousness or depressed. Maybe we are having a difficult time in our marriage, relationship or work. Maybe we are having issues with our kids. Or maybe we feel stuck and we have not found a way to move forward. We are experiencing issues that cannot be treated with classical medicine. What can we do? Psychotherapy and counseling are more than a place to vent. Based on clinical interventions and theories, psychotherapy helps people improve their lives.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
