Thank you for visiting my profile. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, grief from loss, a recent life transition, relationship issues, family issues, or trauma from a catastrophic event, I can help you. My approach with individuals centers around helping you to review emotions, thoughts, life experiences and beliefs to gain insight into your present-day challenges. We can begin to evaluate the problematic patterns you may have developed over time and work together on ways to change those patterns. I do not use a one-size-fits-all approach and will often integrate different treatment methods into our work.

Most of us experience emotional conflict. Anxiety, depression, loss or seemingly impossible situations are among the challenges that interfere with our ability to sustain satisfactory relations at home, the workplace - and most importantly, within ourselves. Feelings of sadness or discontent can lead us unproductively towards substance dependence or persistent grief that overwhelms our lives. Obstacles such as poor self-esteem or past traumas are possible to overcome. Through sensitive inquiry, I encourage exploration of your thought process and resulting behaviors. While respecting your individual concerns, my overall goal is for you to achieve a sense of well-being.

Are you experiencing distress in your daily life and in your relationships? Are you feeling depressed, anxious, confused or disempowered? Are you frustrated by repetitive nonproductive disagreements with your partner? As a practicing therapist for twenty plus years, I have worked with individuals, couples and families struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and substance abuse issues. It is my belief that basic to all relationships, is the relationship with self. In our work we will look at relationship patterns to identify barriers to creating healthy, satisfying connections with ourselves and others in our lives, play, and work.

My hope for my clients is to empower them to reach their goals. That looks different for everyone. We know that anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, addiction, relationship as well as work stressors can negatively impact us and prevent us from having the life we truly deserve and want. Oftentimes, in order to move forward, we need to look back and see why certain things have impacted us and continue to impact us. My approach starts with reviewing goals and determining how best to move forward. Sometimes that means short-term solution focused therapy. Other times, it's cognitive behavioral and narrative therapy along with MI.

As a therapist, I find it extremely important to build a strong alliance with each of my unique clients. Each person engages in therapy at their own pace which often requires a strong foundation of trust. I work with each client to develop the trust and sense of safety needed to be able to be open minded to all that therapy has to offer. Regardless of what is bringing you to therapy, we can explore it together. I can offer new perspectives and help you get to where you want to be. Clients often come to me for a variety of reasons but most often for anxiety disorders, interpersonal challenges, low self-esteem and depression.

During this challenging and difficult time for all of us, simply talking to a therapist can help alleviate stress. Feeling fearful, anxious, depressed, lonely, scatter-brained, unfocused, angry, fatigued, numb are all possible reactions to the state of our current world. You may feel none of these and want to explore something completely unrelated. Our first conversation will give you a sense of whether it's a good fit. Trust your instinct. If it doesn't feel right for any reason, I encourage you to keep searching!

Depression, anxiety, trouble concentrating, behavioral problems, insomnia, interpersonal conflict, low self-esteem, and flashbacks are just a few symptoms that can be caused by underlying trauma. Most of us have dealt with trauma in our lives. A traumatic event could be one isolated incident, such as a car accident or death in the family. Some individuals have experienced pervasive trauma, such as an ongoing medical procedure or family discord. At Robinson Counseling and Wellness, LLC we have clinicians who been trained to effectively resolve the symptoms of trauma and provide a safe environment for healing.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
