Dealing with anxiety, depression, and trauma can feel debilitating. You get stuck in thoughts of worry and fear that feels like a vicious loop you can’t escape. It can cause your world to get very small as it prevents you from participating in normal life. You always feel on edge, and you struggle to trust others. You constantly get triggered by the painful memories in your past. You feel stressed, overwhelmed, and very alone. If this sounds like you, I want to assure you that there is hope. You don’t have to feel stuck and alone in this misery. Reaching out for help is a courageous step towards being the person you want to become.

You may even experience some mild depression or anxiety.
Throughout our lifespan, we will be faced with transitions. Children experiences changes within the family as well as school, friends, and daily routine. Then there’s puberty, which brings about a whole new set of changes in a teenager. Early adulthood is full of change, as well as a search for meaning and purpose. Marriage, divorce, birth of children, death of parents, middle age, retirement, and on and on! Sometimes we can move through these transitions smoothly; however, other times it doesn’t go quite as well.

I have helped clients work through challenges such as depression, anxiety, in addition to relationship concerns, such as physical, emotional, psychological, sexual and domestic abuse.
"At the heart of counseling is listening, the experience of being heard and accepted that enables growth and change" (Toller, 1999).There are times in life when individuals feel stuck, overwhelmed with life's challenges, and perhaps not knowing what the next steps are to make the changes we desire for a balanced and fulfilling life. I believe the individual is complex and unique, as is his or her life story, challenges, and concerns. I work with you to discover your inner strengths, which in turn will help you work through your specific life challenges.

Hi, my name is Alecia, I am Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have lived in Lee County for over 30 years. I work with individuals, couples and families. Life can be a lonely place when you no longer feel yourself or are feeling overwhelmed. Anxiety, depression and traumas can feel like a cinder block on our shoulders. You may wonder how things will change? Change begins with vulnerability. To be vulnerable is to let go of the notion you have to struggle alone.

Grief, complex relationships, trauma, anxiety, depression, career and life dissatisfaction, life adjustments, and intimacy and sexuality challenges amongst so many other things can all be reasons to talk to a professional.
Psychotherapy and taking the first step in initiating services can often feel awkward or almost even scary. But, the personal work you do in therapy can be one of the most rewarding efforts you can undertake.

I have helped my clients with anxiety, depression, anger, parenting issues and relationships.
Peace. Happiness. Love. Success. We seek them. We want them. As we see them within reach, we are knocked down by the challenges and difficulties of life. We find, instead, lives that are filled with anxiety, sadness, grief, trauma, loss and failure. I know this too well. I have experienced this in my own life and in the life of my clients. It does not matter where you are in your life. I have worked with clients from diverse backgrounds to help them navigate the troubled waters of life.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
