I have worked with adults and teens for over 25 years in school and clinical settings, addressing issues including adoption, ASDs, ADHD, depression, anxiety, LGBTQ+, motivation, goals-clarification, and substance misuse.
I enjoy working with adults and teens looking to clarify goals, work more effectively with challenging emotions, and, using Mary Oliver's eloquent words, help them answer the question "what do you plan to do with your one wild and precious life." I use strength-based approaches to help clients set and achieve goals and boost happiness. Having experience as a school-based therapist and as a parent, I am helpful as a parent coach/mentor/therapist and enjoy working with teens regarding school-related challenges.

I specialize in working with individuals who are experiencing anxiety, grief, depression, low self-esteem, conflict in relationships and trauma.
The past is a place of reference, not a place of residence. Prioritizing your mental health is essential to your overall well-being. If you don’t take care of yourself, it affects your relationships and physical health. Knowing the steps to make yourself a priority can be challenging but I can help. My goal is to guide and support you, while empowering you to reconnect back to yourself.

The way psychotherapy is practiced has a lot to do with the mind set and life experience of the psychologist. I have been in private practice since 1980, and beyond the traditional training for psychologists, I also trained extensively in an approach known as Psychology of Mind, or Health Realization. This is a cognitive approach that is very down-to-earth but rooted in principles akin to those behind meditation, yoga and similar traditions that were developed to enhance optimal human functioning.

The last fight you had with your partner was very different. Things took an ugly turn, and you said things you never expected to say to each other. Now you’re not sure how to recover. It feels like you’ve hit a fork in the road. It wasn’t always like this. You remember talking long into the night, sharing your vulnerabilities. Only now, you have them thrown back in your face when the arguing starts. The little digs and insults have created a chasm of hurt between you that feels uncrossable. Last night’s fight was awful, and you never want to go there again. There’s still love between you, but you need help.

Using the therapeutic process I can offer many things to people: empathy and a sounding board, other ways of looking at issues, and ideas about how to solve problems. In addition, I can help you feel more alive to your experience as paying attention to your inner voice can increase your capacity to feel and be present. I have been a therapist for over twenty years. I also have taught clinical practice for ten years to students earning their masters degrees in counseling and I provide ongoing clinical supervision for people who work in various settings.

I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in private practice with over a decade of experience working with adolescents and their families in their homes and in the community. In addition to working with adolescents and their family's I see young adults ages 18-35 virtually. I do my best work with adolescents who “don’t like therapy” or who have struggled to connect or engage with other therapists in the past. This happens for lots of reasons–but one major one is that sometimes sitting in an office staring at one another just feels too threatening.

Waitlist for new clients
My passion and dedication to the work is evident upon our first meeting. My positive energy stems from the belief that change is possible and I come to restore hope. I provide an open, compassionate and non judgmental space for my clients to explore their past and present lives. Collaboratively, we work together, at your pace, to obtain the goals that you identify. I believe that parenting is a journey that we undertake without a map and, at times, along the way, we all get lost. And, together, we can create a new path that feels good to you.

I am a clinical social worker passionate about helping people find ways to their best selves. I provide a safe and supportive environment for the client in search of self-understanding. My specialty is in teaching healthy communication skills to couples, and to help anyone to communicate more effectively. This comes from educating clients about how their past programming and particularly family systems affects them and can create defenses that cause obstacles in their lives. Through understanding one learns to accept all parts of themselves and set themselves free from unwanted emotions and behaviors. Communication improves and personal growth (higher emotional EQ) develops. Please tune in to my instagram post called mind.awakenings for valuable mental health tips and personal development coaching.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
