I specialize in the treatment of depression, anxiety, relationship issues and bereavement issues.
My belief regarding therapy is that it takes a strong person to make the decision to seek it; to acknowledge s/he may need some help. I offer a warm, supportive, and interactive environment. My experience in the field of social work is vast and because it exceeds 20 years, I am able to offer assistance in many areas.I believe we all have strengths we may/not be aware of. Therapy often helps a person to be more aware of his/her strengths and often provides an impetus for change.

Every individual that comes into my office has different needs and the relationship is unique.
"Cliff is a true professional in his field and he is only a pleasure to work with. Some of his strengths are his ability to listen for hours on end and understand multiple perspectives, his sense of humor, his rational voice of reason, his non-judgmental positioning and his warm and welcoming personality. He taught me to cope during the most challenging time of my life and I highly recommend his service." (Female 30's)

Life often presents us with obstacles and dilemmas that can leave us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. At these times, a therapeutic relationship can provide a safe and nurturing space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This exploration can lead to a deeper understanding of yourself and be a space to develop the tools to overcome life's challenges.

Are you facing a challenging situation in your life? Perhaps you are trying to recover from a difficult break-up. Or you may be trying to resolve conflicts in a relationship with a partner, family member, co-worker or boss. Your struggle may be an internal one, such as dealing with behavior that feels out of control, confusion over sexual orientation, gender identity or other issues affecting self-esteem. Utilizing a combination of mindfulness, cognitive therapy, insight oriented and trauma based approaches, my goal is to foster a compassionate view of yourself as you deal with life's challenges.

In addition to my private practice, I have created The Relationship Roadmap, an innovative coaching program to help couples strengthen their relationship as they navigate the journey of parenthood together.
I believe that psychotherapy and coaching are gifts you give yourself. For the past 20 years, I have helped many competent, well-educated men and women whose lives, while "good on paper," are unsatisfying. They feel empty despite successes and have difficulties maintaining healthy relationships with loved ones. My clients feel stuck in their lives and want to make productive changes. I help them examine the ways they repeat the patterns which only lead us to disappointment. I can help you identify these roadblocks to happiness and guide you to create the life you want and deserve.

Foundational to a successful counseling relationship are the qualities of trust, non-judgmental acceptance, genuineness and compassion.
Are you struggling to make sense of your life and your choices? Do you ever feel trapped-backed into a corner with no way to escape? Are you at a turning point and need someone to listen? I believe that people long for meaning and relationship in their lives, especially in these turbulent times. My desire is to help you find both purpose and clarity through the therapeutic experience. Using reflective feedback in conjunction with a positive, Person-centered approach, together we can build upon your strengths, identify maladaptive patterns of behavior, and grow in the ability to make healthy decisions.

I have experience working with teens, adults, and couples of various backgrounds, including people of color, LGBTQIA+, foster care, adoption, and Military/Veteran communities.
You have tried everything you could to feel better, but you’ve reached the point where you need some extra help. The anxiety, depression, and/or trauma that are weighing on you daily has started to impact your job or school performance and relationships. You are feeling burnt out. Therapy may be new to you and it’s common to feel nervous about starting the process. We can work together and create a plan to help you manage and decrease stress. I will teach you healthy skills to use for coping, communication, reframing thoughts, and changing behaviors. I can help you feel empowered so that you are more in control of your life.

The best psychotherapy builds upon a solid relationship between a client and therapist, allowing the client to take risks in examining themselves, acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses, process painful memories and use their strengths to create change. In my therapeutic work I focus on nurturing that relationship to facilitate my client's change and self-acceptance. I am well trained in psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic therapy and family/couples therapy as well as cognitive-behavioral and short term therapy techniques and use what my clients and I believe will best facilitate their goals in treatment.

I work with individuals, couples, and families towards increasing the ability to manage, grow and thrive through life's transitions. The ultimate intention is shifting our outlook from living problem to problem to living solution to solution. By formulating our own answers we have the power to shape and direct our lives. Within the context of Mindfulness-Based Play Family Therapy, I also work with children ages four through the young adult years addressing a variety of developmental issues and assisting them in developing the tools necessary for success.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
