Many seek psychotherapy when suffering proves more uncomfortable than starting a process of self-examination that may itself feel scary. Some feel anxious about finding a therapist to embark on a healing path. Others not in crisis may wish to deepen their self-knowledge and discover new priorities. Whether you're intimidated or excited, I believe my gentle and nonjudgmental manner, my years of experience, and my attunement to individuals’ pain and their drive to adapt will help put you at ease. I provide a space and guidance that support exploration to enhance self-knowledge, envision your dreams and live your fullest possible life.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with an extensive background in research, clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, my clinical approach is informed by empirically validated treatments and techniques, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Like using psychotherapy outcome research to inform my clinical work, I employ a methodological approach to disentangling the various biological, social, and environmental factors that may be contributing to your current and past difficulties. My approach is intensely collaborative and transparent in nature.

Do you feel stuck and helpless - like you're never going to be able to move on from trauma? Have you felt afraid of the future or felt something terrible would happen? Do you have nightmares or intrusive thoughts about your past? Do you feel disconnected from your body or numbed out from your emotions? You’ve been trying traditional ways to heal but regular talk therapy and/or doing it on your own (DIY) can make you feel more hopeless, helpless, stuck, lonely, angry, and resentful. It’s not your fault. The traditional methods are not designed to help you fully heal.

I am accepting new clients 8-5, M-5! Have you have been working so hard to get through each day but are feeling completely overwhelmed and lost? We all have a tendency to put ourselves last, in favor of the many responsibilities we have in life but when doing this we lose track of who we are and what we really need. I specialize in helping people through major life transitions and the work of coming back to themselves and finding their center. If you are a young professional who feels lost, a counselor yourself, or someone struggling to establish healthy boundaries with themselves or others. I might be a good fit for you.

A strong, positive therapeutic relationship is our starting point. Your wellness and growth in self-understanding and self-acceptance are our guiding priorities. I provide a safe, judgment-free environment in which we explore, together, how best to alleviate the suffering, distress, obstacles, and blockages that bring you to therapy. Beyond just reducing symptoms, we identify underlying issues/patterns to heal their emotional origins. Each session is responsive to your current needs. Sometimes this means focusing on deeper insights; at other times, we may work on more immediate strategies for coping with especially difficult or painful moments in your life.

Disappointment, failure, loss, frustration, anger and sadness are unavoidable aspects of human existence. The past cannot be rewritten. But the way in which we choose to come to terms with the past - as either members of a familial unit, a couple, or an individual - will go a long way towards determining our happiness in the present. I bring a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental approach to my work that arises out of my deeply held conviction that the most important determinant of therapeutic success will be the therapeutic alliance between patient and therapist.

Life can be difficult at times. People could feel "dissatisfied with life," or "unfulfilled," despite the efforts. Collaborating with a skilled psychotherapist could help a person or a couple identify and break the maladaptive patterns, make positive changes, and experience more happiness. I am a bilingual (Chinese & English) psychologist with over 20 years of training and experience. I adopt an integrative style, blending elements of Psychodynamic, Interpersonal, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) through the lens of attachment and culture.

Life can be tough and we all need help navigating it effectively. No one has to do it all alone. We all want to be the best versions of ourselves, but often don't know how to find and maintain that version. I want to be your guide in living your best life. You want to see results now with issues that are interrupting daily life. In treatment, you will then benefit longterm from exploring the root causes of these issues.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
