I specialise in chronic pain and chronic health-related challenges because of a life-changing accident when I was 22.
I am a collaborator helping you get the quality of life you deserve. Together, we will work towards the changes you are hoping to make in your life. We'll look at the barriers, the "what's getting in the way" of what you'd like your daily life to be like. My belief about doing therapy with people is that you are the expert in your life. My job is to help you find a stronger connection to your preferred self, and help you untangle from the habits that get in the way of you being more comfortable in your own skin.

Due to my own struggle and remission with Chronic Pain and Acquired Disability, I find it rewarding to work with other individuals with these struggles as well.
My name is Kendra, and I have a very informal approach to therapy. I enjoy laughing and commiserating with my clients and believe that they are best supported by a nonjudgmental therapist who truly cares about their well-being. I work from a strengths-based approach, and as a university professor, I love to connect science and research to help understand everyday issues. I hope to cultivate a space in which people can be their authentic selves and feel safe and supported as they do so.

I know the struggles of having attention difficulties, mood disorders, and chronic pain as a client.
You are so overwhelmed that you are "frozen" and can't stop procrastinating. Whenever you think you'll remember something, you don't. No one understands how hard it is for you to try and deal with your depression and your difficulties with organization. If people only knew all the traumatic stuff you've been through. It's definitely hard to explain to others what is going inside and it would be great if somewhere out there, there is someone who's lived it AND has professional knowledge on all this. I know what it's like to try and find someone that understands you, can guide you, and isn't judging. If this is you, I can help!

Everything is different now. Since your cancer diagnosis, your entire life has been turned upside down. The future that once felt so bright and full of potential now seems dark and frightening. Not long ago, your schedule was packed with dinners, dates, and vacations. Now, your calendar is all doctor appointments and hospital visits. The physical exhaustion and side effects of treatment pale in comparison to the emotional toll. You’re constantly wracked with fear over your illness. Loved ones offer support, but they don’t understand what you’re going through. You wonder if you’re going to feel this scared and lost forever.

Sleep problems may begin out of the blue or stem from illness or stressors, and not sleeping well can make managing other conditions much more difficult.
Sleep problems require specialized treatment. A board-certified sleep psychologist, I work with adults, teens, kids, and families to improve sleep naturally. I help those who struggle to turn off their minds at night, are wide awake at odd hours, or feel unrefreshed in the morning. Many are sleepy all day but can't drift off at bedtime. I help those with distressing nightmares or vivid dreams and those who behave unusually while sleeping. Many are taking a variety of medications, substances, or supplements that aren't working as well, and I help these individuals sleep better and reduce reliance on sleep aids if that is their goal.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
