Have you had a great idea, a POP,  only to talk yourself out of it?  Started a project but abandoned it, telling yourself it was too overwhelming or just not doable?  Wanted to try something new or different and been discouraged by your own thoughts or the words of others?  We all have, haven’t we?  I certainly have.  So what is the driver behind our stopping, getting distracted, being “too busy” and talking ourselves out of actions and desires that will lead to greater fulfillment or happiness?   Fear!  Fear stops us from all things possible, from opening up and receiving the brilliance that this lifetime offers!

Are you trying to do it all and find yourself feeling overwhelmed, depressed, burnt out or depleted? Maybe you are experiencing conflict in your relationships, or worry and anxiety about the future. Maybe you are just feeling stuck, that your life isn't where you want it to be. My goal as a therapist is to create a warm, welcoming, safe space in which you can explore the areas you feel stuck. Together we can explore the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that serve you as well as identify those that don't. We can identify new options and help you make more empowered choices.

Asking for help takes courage. Life can be overwhelming at times. There is continued pressure to feel like we are making progress and moving forward but we remain "stuck" despite will power and the best intentions to change. I believe that through therapy, self-care, and an attempt to truly accept oneself individuals can make progress and positive change within themselves and within their relationships.

The most important part of therapy is building a good rapport with the individual to create a safe and comfortable space. Therapy isn't always easy and neither is the decision to find a therapist; working to ensure clients are comfortable with me and helping them to identify their goals so that the treatment trajectory is predictable, but allows for space to talk about day to day events, if needed. Lastly, ensuring client and therapist personalities align is important as it only enhances the sense of safety and the capacity for positive rapport growth.

My schedule is currently full. My clients come to me looking for clarity, healing and hope that things can get better. Couples counseling is so worth the time and money when you choose to work on your relationship by actively engaging, being consistently present and make the time to find your way back to what matters. Embarking on this journey can help to illuminate the strengths and confront the challenges towards more effective communication, and discovering what repair can look like in your relationship. And if sometimes the journey heads in a different direction, we can explore those pathways as well.

In working with clients, I consider the whole person, their mind, their body, their spirit. These three aspects aren’t separate but are in dynamic conversation: chronic physical symptoms are connected to our mental and emotional states, our feelings of depression relate to how we treat and relate to our bodies and sensorial lives. I enjoy supporting people facing life’s challenges, who are looking for a somatic dimension to their healing. I specialize in helping clients navigate difficult relationships, cope with grief and chronic illness, process the pandemic, and manifest greater depth, vibrancy, and purpose in their lives.

I don't believe therapy should be a practitioner in a chair while a client sits on a couch and talks about their problems. I am focused on coaching you to live your best life. I am looking to get off our seats and move. The goal should not just be to lessen suffering, but to increase happiness. My office is a movement studio, when you walk in you will see punching bags, a squat rack, jump ropes and lots of space, all situated on a 2 acre working micro farm. If you have not had good success with therapy in the past or you feel it's just not for you. Try this movement based, emo-decolonizing approach to mental wellness.

Do you feel stuck and overwhelmed despite being a highly self-aware and an intuitive person? Are you exhausted by anxiety, panic, and nonstop worrying? Have you tried talk therapy before and it was okay but it didn't really create the transformation or deep healing and relief from anxiety you are looking for? I LOVE working with Millennial women, like you, and using a holistic mind, body, soul approach. I will teach you the empath skills you need to get your anxiety under control, stop taking on other people's emotions, and finally set healthy boundaries so you can start living a life of freedom and joy.

Are you struggling to keep it together after an infertility diagnosis or having a tough transition to parenthood? Infertility treatment is isolating - you probably don't know who to talk to, how much to share with your friends/family, and how to plan for the future when you don't know where your treatment will lead you. If you are a new or expecting parent, you are probably also really going through it - the sleep deprivation, the ever-changing needs of your baby, and the pressure to be "the perfect family." I will help you get through this and show up in your life the way you want

Alicia always knew she wanted to be a therapist. She began her initial post undergraduate career of teaching middle and high school for almost nine years. During that time, Alicia learned that she enjoyed supporting the students, talking to them about their challenges, their strengths and other situations in which they needed assistance. Alicia returned to get her Master's in Social Work from Boston College where she graduated in 2011 with an MSW in Clinical Social Work with a concentration in Mental Health. Alicia has spent her career in this field with a passion for providing treatment for those dealing with addiction.

Balancing the challenges of work, school, and home life can be overwhelming. Are you tired of coming home at the end of another long day and finding yourself exhausted and distant from your loved ones? Are daily stressors getting in the way of you enjoying the activities and people you love most? Does self-care feel like an afterthought as long as that assignment is hanging over your head? Without support and strategies to help balance your time and manage your anxieties, you’re likely headed towards burnout. Perhaps you’re already there.

How does body image affect mental health?

Poor body image can influence mental health because it can reduce self-esteem and decrease functioning in other areas of one's life. Negative body image may hinder someone's ability to perform daily tasks, including professional and social responsibilities, because they may feel self-conscious or shame surrounding their appearance; a desire to change one's body as a result of negative body image can also trigger behaviors such as extreme dieting, excessive exercise, or obsessive social media comparison. Poor body image is associated with a number of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders, although many people experience negative body image even in the absence of meeting the diagnostic criteria for any mental health disorders.

What does it mean to have a positive body image?

Body image refers to how one internally perceives their appearance and internally "talks" to themself about their body. Positive body image is therefore indicative of a positive perception of one's self and positive internal self-talk that underscores one's strengths. People who have good body image often have higher self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence, and they also often recognize how external factors, such as social media or relationship patterns, can influence body image. While body image can change at different life stages and in response to various triggers, practicing self-acceptance and a body-positive mindset can help maintain a more stable sense of positive body image.

Is body image the same as self-esteem?

Body image and self-esteem are often related, but they are distinct concepts. Self-esteem is a broader term that can be shaped by a number of factors outside of body image, including one's functioning at school or in the workplace; it refers to one's capacity to handle various life challenges. Poor body image can be one way in which one's self-esteem is reduced. Reduced self-esteem as a result of poor body image can cause individuals to feel negative about their appearance, withdraw from social interactions, and/or rely on harmful behaviors as a coping mechanism. A "body positive" approach to body image therapy is therefore often used to encourage a more positive view of one's self and thus encourage better self-esteem.

What type of therapy is best to foster a positive body image?

The type of therapy best suited to improve body image depends on each person, as there is not a single therapy specific to body image improvement. That said, many individuals with poor body image benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based therapy. CBT can be used to help challenge distorted or negative thoughts about one's body, while ACT and mindfulness practices can facilitate a more positive body image through self-acceptance and identification of one's personal strengths. Regardless of treatment type, clients should look for body image therapists who encourage the development of a sense of self outside of their external appearance and help clients reduce unwanted behaviors developed as a result of poor self-esteem, such as dieting or disordered eating patterns.
