My specialty in adoption has developed over the last twenty years.
The psychiatrist Scott Peck wrote "Life is difficult. ...but once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters." One of the guiding principles of my work is the reality that life presents challenges to all of us. Those challenges often require us to examine views we have held for many years, and work to gain a new perspective. My experience with clients has shown me that for those who seek to grow and learn more about themselves, their relationships, and their lives, there are always answers.

I specialize in Autism, ADHD, SM, PDA, RSD, 2E, ARFID, FASD, PANDAS, LGBTQ+, psychosis, interoception, adoption, veterans, and addiction.
If you’ve found me, you know how difficult it can be to seek answers in the areas of understanding the differences in communication, ways of learning, and social preferences for both neurodiverse children and their parents. You are most likely exhausted and eager to learn more about science-based resources to help your child succeed, as you haven’t been afforded effective parent management techniques or learned about the neurobiology of attachment. Developing co-regulation techniques is essential for calming the nervous system. These techniques guide families and improve family function. EMDR is available for children. NY, FL, VT.

There are times when life seems overwhelming or painful. Everything is confusing and frustrating and it feels like you’ll never be at peace. Anxiety, depression, anger and self-doubt give way to issues in relationships, inability to fulfill responsibilities at work or home, and turning to unhealthy coping behaviors. Since you’re reading this, you want out of this endless cycle and to live differently. Maybe you want to be able to build healthier relationships with those around you. Do you want to be a different partner, parent or friend? Or perhaps the relationship you most want to nurture and explore is with yourself.

Therapy is about change. Your goal might be personal growth, working on a relationship(s) in which you are struggling or to figure out how to manage feelings of depression, anxiety or some other emotionally painful experience. My approach is to help you explore the factors that contribute to what you are experiencing and help you create positive and useful meaning and understanding from the process. I believe that this understanding helps you to be clear about what you want in life and to make choices that help you to feel better, reach your goals and enjoy fulfillment and success.

Suffering is a normal and unavoidable part of human experience. It is our attempt to control or avoid our own painful experiences that can, at times, lead us to suffering beyond what is necessary. If we can learn ways to let go of the struggle to hold onto the pain, while becoming more present in our daily lives, we get move towards the life we say we want.

Let's face it, people typically don't want to seek counseling. By virtue of looking for a therapist, you're acknowledging a difficult issue in your life, one that you haven't been able to conquer on your own. Regardless of what you do for relief, it proves unsuccessful. Counseling can help but can be very difficult. It requires that you face the issues that you don't want to have. The therapist you choose should be someone you believe can guide you on this difficult journey, helping you get to the core issues that are truly impacting your life.

Footprints was started by a therapist who realized that often times the services provided to low socio-economic communities is lacking quality care. We noticed these communities were confronted with long wait times, disrespectful admins, and subpar treatment. The one and only purpose was to exploit the community for profit without providing the level of care deserved. Feel Better Therapy began from the inspiration to provide quality mental health care to the poorest of communities and treating the clients of this community the same way a rich patient would be treated in a clinic treating affluent clients.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
