I offer experience, perspective and professionalism from decades of work with people experiencing a wide variety of life challenges, problems, mood and emotional disorders. I view these issues from a cognitive behavioral and solution-focused therapy model, helping good people find solutions, make changes and experience improvement in the areas of their life and relationships where they are seeking change. I've worked for decades in trauma, addiction and recovery, including couples therapy where one or both of the partners are in recovery and/or struggling with addiction issues both substance and process (eg gambling, pornagraphy).

As we identify and practice acceptance of life's beauty and mystery, anxiety, conflict, depression, and addiction evaporate.
Choosing a more satisfying life depends upon self understanding. Mindfulness teaches life is four fold: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Each life's meaning is learned automatically through each of these four levels. We all flow into outer as well as hidden inner-actions and combinations of both. We all grow continually each moment, as we choose to accept, avoid, or wait. Mindfulness offers us unfolding loving kindness to guide us. My counseling sessions point away from negative habits while encouraging and choosing new healthy ones, practiced during mindfulness meetings, and as chosen by you for your daily life.

Most of my clinical training was at VA hospitals in Palo Alto, CA and Asheville, NC, treating post-traumatic stress and substance use disorders.
I am a firm believer in evidence based treatments and have extensive training and practice in such. That being said, I recognize that "evidence" is usually based on outcomes of clinical trials with very controlled environments where very specific populations with very specific diagnoses are treated. Thus, I find that I am most effective when adapting, integrating and tailoring treatments to my clients' individual needs.

I have experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, and older adults. While I use a variety of approaches (including AEDP, Existential Theory, Attachment Theory, and CBT), ultimately I like to let our work together inform which approach suits our time best. I am knowledgeable about trauma-informed practice and bring a lot of my own life experiences into the sessions, through my work as a teacher, professional firefighter, and professionaI musician.

I am trained in EMDR for relief of trauma and both behavioral and psychodynamic/talking therapies which emphasize positive habits, good health and personal insight. Any change starts from within and sometimes we all need another perspective to grasp the whole picture so that problems or obstacles can be sensibly, sensitively and effectively handled. I work from a strengths-based orientation whereby talents, skills, and interests can be identified. So we go from there, to where the individual learns to utilize those strengths in resolving problems, conflicts, stressors as well as finding sources of comfort, competence and confidence.

I work with adults coping with anxiety, panic attacks, depression, trauma, substance use issues, and/or complex family systems and stressors. I often work with adults whose anxiety and worry in the present is rooted in well-practiced coping strategies to get through difficult early life experiences or family dynamics. My clients are often high-achievers (many times perfectionists) who are highly skilled at taking care of everyone and everything but themselves and struggle in private. They often appear to "have it all together" while facing a harsh inner critic day in and out.

I am an army veteran with two sons and a cat! I have worked in the mental health field for six years, four years as a psychotherapist, one as a substance abuse counselor, and one in a psychiatric inpatient setting.
I firmly believe that everyone can benefit from therapy—whether our problems feel big or small, we all have things we can work on. I would love to see everyone with a primary care physician AND a therapist someday! I like to start out therapy by strengthening coping skills and stress management and then lead into identifying harmful thinking patterns and help you adopt healthier ways of thinking. From there, if need be, I can help you process past trauma, increase your self-esteem, strengthen your relationships, and improve anger management, self-care, mindfulness, and much more (this is just the tip of the iceberg)!

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
