Using strengths-based approaches like CBT and DBT-informed strategies, I can help you shift your self-image to see yourself and the world in a more positive light.
“What is wrong with me?” you ask yourself for the umpteenth time today. That voice in your head never lets up. “Why do I even bother?” “I’m such a hot mess!” You try so hard to be perfect, please everyone, and never let people down, but it’s not enough. So you turn on yourself, repeatedly falling into destructive cycles of overcompensation and self-sabotage. It extends to every aspect of your life. Your last few relationships have all fizzled out before they even got started. No matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to make anything work in your life. You can't even put it into words really. You just feel empty. You feel stuck.

I addition to traditional psychodinamic supportive psychotherapy, I can also make use of other approaches such as DBT and Mindfulness.
Hi! I am Miguel Koschil, MA, LCSW, Ph.D, a bilingual psychotherapist who has been helping various populations for more than 30 years, focusing on depression, anxiety, trauma, anger management, loss-grief, self-esteem and relationships problems. I believe that is not always the type of problem or diagnosis that will predict that a treatment will be a successful but rather the level of motivation of the client.

I have been working in the helping professions my entire adult life. I first became licensed over 25 years ago and have had the pleasure of helping many people over the years, both online and in my private practice. I have worked with individuals, couples and families seeking counseling and served as a supervisor to newly licensed counselors and therapists. While serving on the Faculty at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as the Assistant Director for the Office of Clinical Services and Senior Data Analyst, I learned the importance of setting measurable outcomes and establishing goals for treatment.

Life can be hard and just "raggedy" at times. I know and I get it. For some, reaching out for help is the last thing you may want to do but I would love to walk with you on your journey to healing. Would you believe me if I told you that the answers you are seeking are already within you? I will merely be your guide and safe place to allow you to discover these answers. There is so much more in store for you versus the current narrative you have been rehearsing to yourself.

It takes great strength to reach out to another for help, so the one you choose must be someone you can feel free to open up with, trust, and respect. I am confident I can provide that for you! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker as well as a Certified Addictions Specialist. I have over 17 years of experience, working in a myriad of areas. Most of my experience has been working with domestic violence, addiction, depression, anxiety, and reentry. I also have experience working with people who have struggled with trauma. I feel that counseling is not to blame our past, but rather to explain our thoughts and behaviors.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
