I specialize in bereavement and caregiver support.
Life can be hard…therapy helps. We experience many changes in our lifetime and all of them - whether positive or negative changes - can cause stress. As a society we are not great at acknowledging the negative or the stress that accompanies these life changes. Social media has only amplified this ever present pressure for the “perfect life.” The reality is that life can be hard and the world is not always perfect or kind. Therapy can help us to better understand the stressors in our life and develop a plan to cope with those stressors.

Excessive stress, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, and even depressive thoughts can manifest during all different time periods in our life. Many of the work with my clients surrounds around life transitions, illness, chronic illness, loss, work related stress and relationship issues/ break ups and body dysmorphia. While times like these can get tough and may even feel unbearable, it is important for you to know that these feelings/ situations are completely normal and you do not have to cope with these feelings and situations on your own.

Do you suffer from depression, anxiety, social anxiety, stress, disorganization-in life and at work, life changes, divorce, relationship issues, family conflicts, trauma, substance use, family dynamics concerns, a lack of self-esteem, OCD, a mood disorder, a personality disorder, grief/loss, a lack of boundaries, or PTSD.
Are you looking for a better approach toward life, your relationships, your career, life's transitions, your family? Our journey in life causes us to reflect on our experiences, which develop, define, and teach us, not only about ourselves but the lives of those around us and the world itself. Life often has a way of teaching us what we have either longed for, what we need to learn, or what we can learn, to help us work through difficult times, in order to allow ourselves the ability to love ourselves. It’s through these experiences/ times that we become stronger, to allow ourselves to heal to become the best version of ourselves.

When life becomes unmanageable it can make one feel very alone. It’s in these moments that we need to reach out for help and guidance to get ourselves back on track. We know that anxiety, depression, anger, grief, etc. are all issues that we deal with throughout our lifetime. What some do not know is that we don’t have to deal with these emotions on our own. There are many different coping skills in place to help you manage and heal.

Areas of specialization include: depression, anxiety, relationship issues, women's issues, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), adjustment issues, separation and divorce, addiction and recovery, co-dependency, ACOA, chronic illness, cancer patients and their families, aging, job stress and bereavement.
I view therapy as a collaborative process that facilitates communication, problem-solving and self-exploration, which leads to lasting change in relationships and life. As a clinical psychologist in practice for over 27 years, I have learned that while no single type of therapy works for everyone, a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship is essential to achieving growth and change. We use this relationship to learn about how you feel and behave in other significant relationships. Therapy becomes a place to try new ways of communicating and to develop new ways of seeing things. Ultimately, therapy leads to taking healthy risks in relationships and life.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
