Navigating the labyrinth of contemporary life can feel overwhelming, leaving us adrift in a sea of uncertainty, anxiety, and existential questioning. As we begin to understand the unconscious - what our symptoms communicate to us and how they have come to structure us - we shed the abounding sense of lack that we've carried and endured for years. Through this process, a novel way of being in the world emerges.

My approach to psychotherapy is existential and humanistic.
It is often difficult to identify why we are unhappy. It can feel like something has disconnected us from the sense of spontaneous creativity and joy which defines a good life. Instead of freedom and self-determination, we feel trapped and pressured by society's demands, unsatisfying relationships, or feelings that we don't know how to address. I would work with you in therapy to reconnect with your own place of authenticity, power, and creative engagement. To accomplish this, I utilize a collaborative approach including talk therapy, dreamwork, clinical hypnosis, and experiential/body-based methodologies.

I believe that my work is in helping clients walk less blindly through life. I try to ask questions to clarify the principles underlying the ways they relate to the world and others. I help not only with common problems (anxiety, depression, PTSD, phobias, OCD, etc.) but also work with those whose issues are not easily captured by a diagnosis and are existential in nature. The so-called "worried well" come to uncover and work through the sources of internal struggles, in order to become their best selves and live a more fulfilling life. I am fully bilingual and practice in both English and Russian.

My approach is informed by Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Neuroscience and Existential theory.
There is no single way to live a fulfilling life. All of us need a safe place to talk about what we're experiencing. Expressing your thoughts and feelings to another person is an essential part of transformation. This is especially true when done in a therapeutic environment where you can explore new ideas and make your own decisions about your life without fear of intrusion from the other. My clinical intention is to help clients see and experience themselves in a new way.

I was born and raised in northern New Jersey and obtained a doctorate from NYU. I now have over 30 years experience as a clinician and work with people who have relationship/work issues, anxiety, depression and more. I have a diverse practice in NYC and these days my practice is with primarily adults and on-line. In February 2022, I became a prostate cancer survivor so that is now part of my personal and professional journey. I am pleased to know that people experience me as a compassionate, thoughtful, and competent professional who approaches the therapeutic work relationally and with a sense of humor.

Crossroads, life transitions, and changing situations can overwhelm us and get in the way of our ability to cope. In therapy, we explore the inner drives, motivations, conflicts, and entrenched narratives that may hinder our ability to manage life’s difficulties and connect with others. Sessions with me facilitate development of a stronger relationship with oneself, understanding ones patterns and desires to foster self-esteem and acceptance.

When we are wrestling with anxiety or depression, all we think of is getting rid of the pain. But actually, the focus must be on making you emotionally healthy, i.e., enabling you to become a happy and fulfilled individual. In my 40 years of working with people, all emotional ill-ease dissipates with a robust sense of confidence and resulting good mood. Think of those moments when you have felt entirely confident and happy. Did you experience any emotional discomfort? Of course not. For those moments, you felt wonderful. It is psychotherapies’ goal/mission to give you the tools to elevate your mood every single day of your life.

I am a Psychotherapist, Life Coach, and Consultant. In a career that began twenty-five years ago in the Middle East, now established in NY, I have seen clients from every conceivable background who have sought nurturing guidance to face trauma, anxiety, grief and sadness. Often, whether working with persons suffering from loss or separation, abuse victims, veterans, refugees, or families of substance abusers, I have witnessed that moment of clarity in a client when they realize there is actually hope for a better, more satisfying life. This, I believe, is the essence of therapy and I strive to smooth the path towards and beyond it.

It can be challenging to process all sorts of mixed emotions, as they wear you down in your personal and professional life. You may even begin to have self-doubts, struggling to move forward with your goals. The process of navigating these challenges on your own can be confusing, drowning, and overwhelming. I will work with you to build a collective space where we explore your concerns together, understand your emotions, and help you reestablish meaningful connections with others . I see therapy as interactions where you will be empowered to confront reality and appreciate yourself as a whole.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
