I am skilled at teaching many strategies - from Mindful Self-compassion to CBT and DBT to Gottman Method and Narrative Therapy to Eco-therapy.
Over the last thirty years as a Clinical Psychologist, I have learned how children, adults, couples, and families break free of disheartening relational patterns and rewrite oppressive stories. I have learned how to attend to what matters most: feeling safe, opening to love, and creating a life guided by compassion. I truly love my work, and that may be because I am still learning every day how to ask questions that spark wonder and creativity, how to listen for the depth behind words, knowing when to be patient, when to challenge.

Currently offering couples counseling sessions. Please inquire if interested. Welcome! My name is Tanya Farrar Brooks and I am a licensed mental health counselor who began her own therapeutic journey while very much entrenched in an unhealthy relationship. When I began therapy, I could not have known the impact that it would have on my ability to move on from that relationship and discover who I truly was. My decision to take that brave step of talking to a stranger was life-changing. Through that process, I was able to find my strength, and my voice.

Please note: At this time, I am only accepting referrals for ADHD evaluations. A major focus of my work is in the evaluation and treatment of ADHD children, teens and adults. I understand how ADHD affects families and relationships, school, work and self-esteem. Because of the level of misinformation, I provide the facts about ADHD along with evidence-based strategies for bringing about change. Additional practice areas include couples counseling, parenting issues and helping adults with anxiety, depression and/or relationship difficulties.

Hello and thank you for being here! I have been a licensed therapist for over a decade with experience working with children, teens, and adults in school, home, inpatient, and outpatient settings. For the past few years, I’ve specifically focused on working with adults to help resolve something that isn’t working anymore. I understand it is difficult to handle concerns such as loss, relationship conflict, anxiety, or addiction along with many other problems that impact health and well-being.

Men, women, and couples who seek relief from anxiety, depression, and interpersonal conflict find me to be of assistance. People I treat tend to be highly functioning with regard to family, employment, and community. For many, however, the appearance of success is not consistent with their degree of emotional suffering. The pressures and stress of money, work, and relationships can be overwhelming at times. Since each person's suffering is unique, my approach is tailored to each individual or couple I see. My skills and energy help create an atmosphere of trust and hope so positive change can occur.

Let’s be honest, life can be overwhelming and exhausting. Living with anxiety, depression, guilt, anger, or shame can be draining and leave us feeling hollow. We’re all facing our own challenges and these become harder when we feel stuck, don’t see our worth, or find ourselves constantly in our heads. We’re naturally inclined to focus on our mistakes, limitations, doubts, and insecurities. The odd thing is, most of us experience the same things, but we don’t really talk about it. These feelings can be debilitating, but there are research-based methods that help people find more peace of mind, security, and joy.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
