I have seen clients for many years who are managing addiction and related couple/family issues. I spent decades in hospital settings seeing clients with all sorts of grieving concerns. From health, lifestyle, legal, and stress management to end-of-life challenges, I am delighted to assist clients to approach situations in a hopeful, pragmatic, and strategic manner with the goal of achieving greater mind, body, and spirit health and wellness.

Making decisions in difficult life situations is harder when emotions make you feel stuck or reactive and lead to unwanted outcomes. Learning to safely express difficult emotions and recognize how and when feelings distort thinking, you will find healthier ways to respond. I work with people whose blocked feelings lead to physical and/or emotional pain, and help couples in problematic relationships develop clearer boundaries. I also have expertise with people facing end-of-life issues and welcome those who seek to explore these concerns.

My approach is firmly grounded in the belief that lasting change largely comes through seeking a deeper understanding of oneself, and I work with my patients to cultivate a habit of curiosity around this. I take a collaborative, integrative approach with a particular interest in marginalized groups and the intersection between culture and mental health.

Mood disorders do not exist without psychosocial issues, such as school performance, employment conflict, unemployment, middle life crisis, marriage conflicts, divorce, parenting, broken family, financial troubles, bankruptcy, family deaths, etc. Manic symptoms can be taken as wild and difficult personality and a person can live years and years of social and emotional hardships without assessment and treatment. Undetected psychotic symptoms such as prodromal phase of schizophrenia in adolescent can delay treatment, resulting in isolation and violence. The pandemic has caused unimaginable degrees of various mood disturbances.

Sometimes just making it to your first appointment is a major victory! Anxiety, fear, and wondering if you are going crazy are everyday life. Perhaps your goal is to survive another day, but what if you can thrive someday? What would it look like if panic no longer stops you? What if depression no longer keeps you in bed? During our time together we celebrate the small victories, slow down the racing thoughts, stop nightmares, find words to explain what you feel, find joy, and so much more.

My approach to psychiatry is based on the principle that the human spirit is resilient and has the ability to heal when supported. With that in mind, I use an integrative approach to help my patients achieve greater mental health and well-being. I work with individuals who have depression, anxiety, unresolved traumas, concentration difficulties, unfulfilling relationships, and career and academic difficulties transform their challenges into personal growth and self-realization. I seek to help people live healthy and meaningful lives.

Somatic Psychiatrists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
