I completed my residency from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts and my Fellowship in Addictions from the Robert Johnson Wood Foundation. I'm a psychiatrist in private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts, providing diagnostic assessments, psychotherapy, and medication management for children, teens and adults. I trained at the Massachusetts General Hospital in psychiatry and child psychiatry, and was on faculty there for 20 years, before moving to the Boston Medical Center and the Boston University School of Medicine. I've had a part time private practice in Cambridge through most of my career.

My approach is to synthesize a medical-model to the evaluation and treatment of your symptoms with a commitment to psychodynamic therapy. Diagnostic labels can be useful if you may need medications; but,even more important is our work together to understand the context of your current difficulties. What are the triggers for your symptoms; what are the meanings you give to feelings; and, how do your relationships, past and present, effect your coping style? My aim is to facilitate your growth towards ever greater authenticity, and to empower you to make healthier choices and maintain a more positive outlook.

As a Harvard-trained board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist, I believe that excellent psychiatric care is centered on the whole person, not just on a diagnosis or a specific medication. Dr. Nicholas Barnes is a Harvard-trained, board-certified psychiatrist in the Boston area (Belmont, MA). He provides treatment for depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, addiction and chronic pain. As a psychiatrist, psychotherapist and additionally a board-certified pain medicine physician, he is uniquely qualified to bridge the gap between medical and psychological treatments. Dr. Barnes draws on traditional talk therapy, mindfulness and philosophical perspectives, and modern neuroscience to help people develop insight, emotional freedom, self-acceptance, and behavioral change.

I am a psychiatrist in private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Services I provide include psychiatric evaluation/consultation, individual psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology for adults 18 to 65. At this point, I only provide medication management for patients whom I am working with in a regular psychotherapy. I have an academic affiliation with McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the MGH/McLean Adult Psychiatry Residency Program, where I teach in a psychotherapy course and provide outpatient supervision of residents.
