Taking your child to a psychiatrist is not an easy decision. Many parents have concerns about unnecessarily medicating their child or labeling them with a diagnosis at such a young age. As a physician and as a parent, I take those concerns very seriously. I do a lot of groundwork before I diagnose a child. I use validated rating scales completed by multiple sources and I always work in conjunction with a therapist. I take a family-centric approach to treatment. For school evaluations, I see my role as an advocate for the child, while not losing sight of the school's perspective.

I possess over 13 years of experience in the behavioral health field both in inpatient and outpatient settings. I am the program director of the masters nursing tracks for a local University. I am a nominated board member of the Connecticut Nurses Association. I provide supervision and mentorship to novice APRNs at a local community mental health agency.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist who has been practicing for over thirty years. My training consisted in many rotations at Yale and the University of Illinois. Since training, I have spent most of my clinical practice in acute inpatient, which is high-intensity and the most conducive to perfecting my ability to practice psychiatry.

I have experience working with clients who are struggling with a broad range of psychiatric issues including Anxiety, Panic Disorders, Depression, Mood Disorders, OCD, PTSD, ADHD Bipolar Disorder, Sleeping Disorders and other mental health conditions. I treat clients throughout the life span.

Dr. Atkins is a staff psychiatrist at Talkiatry. He is board-certified in adult psychiatry and has been in practice for the past 2 years. Dr. Atkins has focused his practice primarily on medication management. He combines medication management with a therapeutic style that is a blend of supportive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing.
