Most patients seeking treatment feel that despite their best efforts, inside they feel helpless, confused and demoralized. Dynamic psychotherapy and its "big brother" psychoanalysis are treatments designed to repair self-esteem and restore a full capacity for living. I see patients frequently, usually twice a week and it is out of our work together that hidden self-knowledge emerges and a renewed optimism about life's possibilities arises. Please visit my web site: www.drvanderheide.com or call me to discuss how I might help you.

It is no small task to lead a fulfilling life with meaningful relationships and a sense of purpose. In times of suffering, that goal can seem impossible. When our usual ways of adapting to stress fail, we need an outside perspective to guide us to a deeper understanding of our harmful and at times destructive mental patterns. There is no simple algorithm for healing the complex wounds formed over a lifetime. For some, a carefully tailored medication regimen can be helpful, leading to relatively quick relief of debilitating symptoms. For others a purely psychotherapeutic approach may be a better fit.

I treat executives and high functioning people with addiction and alcoholism, many have underlying disorders such as general anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive/compulsive disorders, and adult ADD/ADHD. Even though I am a Psychiatrist , I prefer to treat patients with psychotherapy or combination therapy of medicine and therapy (The Gold Standard of Treatment). I believe that people can always benefit from learning more about themselves, their behavior and their symptoms.

Hi there, I have been trained to treat many psychiatric illnesses and issues, with both medication and psychotherapy. The treatment I provide is often a unique combination which pulls from several different types of therapies, including interpersonal psychodynamic, supportive, DBT and CBT. My patient population ranges from children as young as 6 years old to adults. The majority of children I work with are struggling with anxiety or ADHD, often both. The adolescents and adults that I treat have a variety of issues, including anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders and mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder.

We have all felt stuck at some point or other. We've all found ourselves in the same kind of situation, involved in the same kind of relationships over and over again. Yet, it is important to have options in life and to develop the ability to choose our response. I am Board Certified in both, Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis. For over 20 years, I have been helping people with problems ranging from anxiety, depression, and grief, to dissatisfying relationships, careers, and familial circumstances.

My hope and expectation is that my broad experience in helping individuals of all ages to find better ways to handle their feelings, relationships, and lives will help me to find a way to help you. I have spent many years studying what happens in therapy sessions and have become an internationally known expert on how, when, and whether patients benefit. I try to put that knowledge to use in every session. As a physician, I can evaluate whether medication may also be helpful in the short term while working together on problems that have contributed to your present unhappiness.

My clients are most often experiencing depression and/or anxiety symptoms and require empathy, understanding and nonjudgement. This is crucial for improving their quality of life. Feeling understood can help alleviate the isolation and stigma often associated with mental health conditions.

Borderline Personality (BPD) Psychiatrists

What is the most successful approach to treating borderline personality disorder?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is considered the gold standard of treatment for borderline personality disorder. An evidence-based treatment, it addresses the extreme emotional reactivity, the relationship difficulties, and the acts of self-harm that create so much distress for BPD patients. DBT is a comprehensive program that includes both regular individual psychotherapy sessions and weekly group sessions of skills training.

What happens in treatment of borderline personality disorder?

Treatment typically consists of weekly individual therapy sessions that last an hour and group skill-focused instructional sessions that may last up to two hours. Patients are typically given homework “assignments” in which they are asked to practice in their daily life the skills they acquire in therapy. Patients also keep a diary tracking their emotions and impulses as a way to know which situations are most problematic and to help them gain control over their own behavior. Difficult situations and feelings are typically reviewed in therapy sessions and more constructive solutions found.

What kinds of problems does BPD treatment help with?

DBT was initially developed to dampen the self-destructive impulses of chronically suicidal patients. It is now the treatment of choice for borderline personality disorder, a serious condition marked by extreme emotional reactivity, relationship instability, and self-injurious behaviors. Treatment of BPD helps patients tolerate the flux of emotions without acting on them, often with a specific focus on tolerating negative emotions. DBT addresses the core problems of BPD—fear of abandonment, low self-esteem, and impulsivity.

What is the goal of treatment in borderline personality disorder?

The goal of treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) is to relieve the extreme emotional distress that patients experience—to curb their emotional reactivity, to minimize their inclination to self-harm, and to reduce their impulsivity. Toward these ends, patients are not only taught an array of new coping skills and techniques for emotional regulation, they are given opportunities to practice them. Another major goal of treatment is interpersonal effectiveness; patients learn and problem-solve ways to effectively communicate in relationships, especially how to ask for what they need as a way to minimize hurt feelings.
