Sexual Abuse Support Groups in England

The initial sessions of the group is focused on creating safety for all participants and building group connection. We will address some key issues survivors may struggle with and participants will be offered tools to support their recovery at their own pace and look at ways to develop healthy coping strategies that will support them in the longer term. These closed groups of 6 participants are not 'drop-in' as they follow a structured sequence so it's important you can commit to attending all twelve sessions.

"Sometimes Trauma..." is a small online group for people dealing with Trauma/PTSD/CPTSD. It runs weekly during term-time Monday 6.45-8.15pm, with a very select number. I offer an initial exploratory 30 minute session to gather information to check the group is for you. That might include taking a brief history, and looking at levels of depression/anxiety/trauma symptoms. The group includes check in, therapy/processing and a practical second part, with topics like: trauma neuroscience trauma, increasing your Window of Tolerance, attachment styles, triggers, building a trauma "toolkit", & EFT. Good therapy is about change: changing reactions, behaviours, a difficult aspect of self, challenging attitudes/beliefs about yourself or your story. I love working with clients who are prepared to jump in, take risks and seek solutions - this is the way to ensure real change. I will jump in and risk too. I value being human and involved in the therapy and am also practically minded and view the best wisdom as something that can directly be applied to life. A supervisee recently described me as "real, relational, ordinary, practical and not floaty/wispy". I like to incorporate psychoeducation and relevant theoretical information.

12 week online support group for female, non-binary (AFAB) and trans female survivors of sexual violence. The group will form in the first session, making an agreement of how we want to work together, and thinking about what members wish to get out of the group. The following group sessions will be structured to facilitate the wishes of each group, and will be closed to new participants after the first session. I have group facilitation training and 6 years experience of facilitating sexual violence support groups in a sexual violence support centre. Groups are for 8 and 12 participants.

Perhaps there is a specific issue you would like to look at, or maybe an underlying feeling of something not being quite right? You may feel that you are at a point in your life where you would like to make some changes, or perhaps you would like a safe space to explore a little? There are no right or wrong reasons for seeking counselling… As a person-centred counsellor I prefer to see people in a holistic way, rather than by defining them by the issues that they may bring to counselling.

I work with both children and adults and have a keen interest in working with those who have experienced complex/relational trauma with or without self harming/suicidal behaviour. I work with a variety of mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. I also work with couples experiencing difficulties in their relationship and work towards understanding the emotional conflicts, that result in the relationship being strained or likely to end without support. There is no one size fits all therapeutic approach and so I place importance on developing a shared understanding of what the core emotional issues are that impact you.

Sexual Abuse Support Groups

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
