If you have been struggling with anxiety, self-criticism, shame, low mood, difficult emotions & relationships, it may be the right time to find a trusted therapist; someone to help you understand & grow from the effects of adversity, stress & trauma. Our wellbeing can be affected by many things - work stress, early adversity, significant trauma or relationships, and we do our best to find helpful coping strategies. When our ways of coping don't work so well, we can feel stuck and isolated - psychological therapy can help us move beyond those barriers. I focus on you as an individual, without using labels or diagnoses.

Hi, I'm Jo, I'm a qualified counsellor and have many years of experience. I currently work for the NHS as well as in private practice.  I understand that sometimes we all need someone to talk to, life can become overwhelming, confusing, or distressing for anyone, for many different reasons.  This is where counselling, and I, can be useful.  Counselling can be just the place to untangle your thoughts and make sense of what is going on for you, and how you might like it to change. I recognise that everyone is different. We are all individuals, and I therefore believe that therapy should also be unique to you, and your experience.

Sometimes life throws us challenges both through past and present experiences, which knock us off our feet and we become engulfed in uncertainty, worry and fear. It could be that we start to doubt ourselves and feel that we are not good enough or we are unable to cope, leading to anxiety and depression. Whatever you are going through, it deserves care, attention and compassion and I believe that you have the inner wisdom to work through these issues as you are the person that knows yourself better than anyone,

Are you having problems with your relationship, family or friends? Maybe you are feeling dissatisfied, overwhelmed, guilty, upset or angry? Whatever feelings you have, it usually means pain for you in some way. Counselling isn’t just something people do when they are in crisis or at rock bottom, attending before problems snowball or get too overwhelming can help and save more pain in the long run.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
