Hi my name is michelle and I am aware Choosing to start therapy can often feel daunting and terrifying.  I understand this journey, both from a personal and from a theoretical perspective. So, I just want to say thank you for putting yourself out there, even know you may have feelings of apprehension.

Sometimes life is overwhelming and we don't have all the answers. Stressful events can cause negative thoughts and anxiety which keep you on edge and impact sleep. To cope, you may try really hard to fix things, please others, or avoid activities and settings you previously enjoyed, as it all seems too much. This keeps us stuck in a vicious cycle, which is just exhausting. The good news is that CBT can help. By understanding your experience, you can learn achievable coping strategies that work for you. This means you can feel more in control, manage difficult emotions and get back to being you.

It's tough opening up to someone but we, via the therapeutical alliance, can create a safe space of trust where there is confidentiality, no judgment and that the client feels comfortable sharing. Here are some testimonials from previous clients for you to ponder: Social anxiety- My gran nearly fainted when she saw me ask someone who works in a shop a question, something I've never done in my life before. Grief- My therapist has helped me as I was feeling lonely and it cheered me and made me realise that I do have a future by myself with friends and family to support me. Low self esteem- I've realised I'm stronger than I thought.

I've seen first hand how supportive Art Psychotherapy can be. Dealing with all that life can throw at us can leave us feeling helpless, anxious, low and stuck. I work with individuals from all walks of life and different stages, experiencing difficulties such as anxiety, chronic illness, grief and loss to support them in feeling better emotionally. Art Psychotherapy helps engage the brain and body a little differently through creativity, art and image making, in addition to talking. Together, we can create a healing therapeutic environment where stories can be shared, emotions processed, and holistic wellbeing fostered.

Hi, I'm Debbie, a qualified CBT therapist based in Glasgow. Life presents many challenges and difficult situations, and sometimes we need support to help us overcome what's negatively impacting on our lives. The first step to getting support can be the hardest one to take, but can often be the most important one, in helping identify, challenge and overcome those negative thoughts, or challenges and create a happier future. Finding the right therapist to connect and build a trusting relationship with is so important, to allow you to be yourself and get what you need from your therapy sessions.

We all experience emotional pain; as an infant, a child, a teenager, a parent and an adult. Whether it’s in response to life events (e.g. loss, trauma, moves), transitions (e.g. to adolescents, as a parent, retirement), adjustment to ill health (e.g. cancer, chronic illness, injury) or life in general (e.g. long term low mood or anxiety). Accepting that we need help and support can be hard and daunting. Getting the right help is important and can teach you how to live a fulfilling life.

Changes to our bodies, whether illness or an expected change like menopause, can be tough to deal with.
If you've been dealing with concerns about your physical health, it might be impacting your mental health, too. Worries about being or becoming unwell can be overwhelming, take over your mind and your time, and stop you from living life the way you want. You might be feeling anxious about the future, or stuck in your current circumstances, and spending lots of time monitoring your symptoms or looking for reassurance. If you want to feel more in control of your anxiety, therapy can help you address the thoughts you're having, change the behaviour that might be keeping the anxiety going, and cope with your emotions around your health.

My ideal client would be someone wanting to gain self-awareness and insight into themselves. A person who is ready to seek a space for exploration and wants to use it to find out who they are, not what society and other people are telling them they should be, but their authentic voice. The client would want to find greater freedom by exploring the life journey they have been on and what this has meant to them. It's not for me to tell the client what their goals are but for me to provide them with a therapeutic space so they can find out for themselves.

Having gone through some of my own personal struggles, I know how important it is to have someone listen. To be able to vocalise your thoughts without any fear of judgment. Sometimes it can feel like the end of the road with no-where else to turn. It can feel like there is no hope left. Negative thoughts seem to go round and round in your head. This is the time to reach out and let someone help you. I aim to provide a safe and confidential space to work through issues and will use other evidenced based therapeutic approaches to suit individual needs, such as compassion focused therapy and mindfulness.

The idea of my approach is an integrative one: I've studied, and I'm qualified to deliver, a mixed modality of therapies to address client issues. From psychodynamic active listening and using a safe space to get things out in the open, or perhaps using CBT techniques to address something specific, either way - I'm equipped to help guide you through what it is that is troubling you, or holding you back, from moving forward.

Are you living with the symptoms of emotional ‘trauma’, distressing memories and emotional triggers? Is this making life, work and relationships more difficult? Perhaps you experience flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, panic, phobias, anger? We can use Internal Family Systems' therapy with EMDR therapy to compassionately engage with your self. We can befriend your troubled 'parts' and unburden them of their jobs. I use a somatic trauma-informed approach to your therapy, i have worked as a clinical specialist in the NHS and have a great deal of experience, particularly with relationship difficulties, obsessions, and complex cases.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
