We all go through times in our life where we may struggle. Whether your difficulties stem from things happening now, or from past experiences, I hope we can work together to help you understand yourself better and cope better with emotional demands. This could be through exploring patterns of behaviour, responses to emotional situations or ways of being in relationships. Perhaps you’re feeling anxious, upset, low or overwhelmed by negative or frightening feelings? Maybe struggling in your relationships or just feeling stuck. Talking openly about how you are feeling can be very powerful, helping to ease and reduce troubling thoughts

I'm experienced at helping people with a wide range of issues and have a proven track-record of collaborative working to reduce suffering and enhance awareness. Whatever the nature of your pain the core of this work is self-expression and self-exploration to find a freer, healthier way to be in the world. This involves a balance of self-acceptance and change. I will be deeply present along side you in this exploration.

We all face emotional difficulties at some point that stop us from enjoying life as much as we would like. Talking to friends and family can be helpful, but sometimes this isn't possible or doesn't feel enough. Whether you're finding things challenging, or you have a sense that you could be more connected with yourself and others in your life, counselling can offer a unique opportunity to explore whatever is troubling you, and can help by providing you with support and understanding.

Reasons for seeking counselling may vary and these could include a wide range of psychological or emotional distress as well as the need to explore your life more deeply or reflect on particular life decisions or dilemmas. The way we approach challenges in life and the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that arise from them can sometimes be the source of further suffering which can be experienced as shame, self-criticism, isolation, self-loathing, self-blame and deep emotional suffering.

"Depression is the common cold of psychopathology and has touched the lives of us all" (Dr Martin Seligman). In my 20 year experience as a CBT therapist I have learned that Seligman is right - everybody will experience at one point in their life depression, anxiety or another form of mental health problems. Some of us will manage on their own, some of us will need help. Seeking help for stress and mental health problems should not have any stigma attached to it - it is one way of dealing with the impact of living in an imperfect world.

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist with over 15 years experience working with adults both privately and in the public sector. I am also a BPC accredited DIT (Dynamic interpersonal Therapy) practitioner. I work both In the short term 6 -16 sessions and long term. An initial meeting can allow us to explore what is going on to determine if brief therapy like DIT or longer open ended therapy is suitable. As well as working in my own practice I have worked in various settings Such as a busy GP practice and an addictions unit. I also work as a critical incident consultant.

Can obesity be a cause of depression and anxiety?

Yes. It can be stressful and debilitating to carry excess weight. Many people make inaccurate assumptions about people who are overweight. This stigma may lead individuals to feel badly about themselves, decreasing their self-esteem, or leading to feelings of worthlessness. An association between obesity and depression is well-established.

When should an individual seek treatment for obesity?

When obesity, or the feelings it causes, creates a disruption in your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Examples include avoiding social situations due to anxiety, an inability to participate in family life as a result of health problems, or poor performance at work due to low self-esteem or other concerns.

Are there specific medications for weight loss?

There are several prescription drugs that can help with weight loss, including semaglutide and phentermine. These drugs reduce appetite and must be prescribed by a physician. Professionals will suggest lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, before turning to drugs, which have side effects and typically are prescribed only for a short duration. Many people regain weight after taking weight loss drugs if they have not made significant lifestyle changes.

What is body positivity?

Body positivity is a cultural movement that promotes the acceptance of bodies of all sizes and types, rather than those that conform to societal ideals of beauty. It places self-worth, self-acceptance, and an appreciation for one’s body as goals to achieve a happier, healthier attitude about oneself and others, focusing on who a person is rather than what they look like.
