I volunteer with CRUSE bereavement working with children, young people and adults.
Hi! I am Emmajane Davis and I am a Counsellor based in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. I work with Young people and Adults of all ages to help them to understand and work through any life concerns they are experiencing. The type of counselling I offer is integrative, this means I use a variety of therapy models to work with my clients, I like to work this way as each client is an individual and that means each clients concerns are unique to them. I work face to face with my clients and offer short term and long term work.

I work with adults, children and young people & cover a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, panic attacks, bereavement, self esteem, sexual abuse, bullying, trauma, family, intrusive thoughts & repetitive behavioural patterns.
At times in our life, many of us feel unbalanced in some way. We may know there is something there, that there’s something to unravel but feel unable to access what it is – for others we know what’s causing us discomfort but feel unable to share with friends or family members. I can provide you with a confidential space to explore and unravel whatever is going on for you - without judgement and at your own pace. We can work together to reach your potential as a individual, allow your thoughts and feelings to become clearer & the mental dust to settle, perhaps make changes & move forward positively in a way comfortable to you.

I will support you when life is feeling tough, even overwhelming, especially when you are experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, grief, bereavement, feeling lost or empty or having negative thoughts and feelings or perhaps there are changes you want to make in your life and would benefit from being in a calm and nurturing space. We can work together in a compassionate environment by exploring what is happening for you at the moment and perhaps looking at your past, such as your childhood or relationships, how it affects you now whilst helping you to move forward to live the life you want to experience.

Has something happened and your world’s been turned upside down? Do you feel lost? It’s common for everyone to experience bumps in the road of life; but what happens when you just don’t know how to deal with those bumps? Perhaps you talk to family, friends or colleagues, maybe you just keep it all in, cross your fingers and hope for the best. Talking things over is known to help, especially when you are really listened to by someone who doesn’t judge you or tell you what to do, all in confidence. You might not realise it yet, but you are the expert on your own life and counselling can give you the keys to unlock that expertise.

Life is tough. The world can be a very harsh and unforgiving place indeed. Above all I work with kindness, acceptance and understanding - successful therapy always depends upon a partnership between you and me, both/all of us working purposefully together to solve the issues that are in your way - let's face it, there is simply not enough of those three qualities around these days. It is never a failure to reach out for help - never. It takes courage. So please reach out: I promise to take your hand, keep you safe, and together we'll walk the path to better days.

As a psychodynamic counsellor and hypnotherapist, my approach to working with clients is rooted in psychodynamic theory, which emphasises the exploration of unconscious processes and the influence of past experiences on a person's current thoughts, feelings, and actions. Here's a general outline of how I work with my clients: I shall meet with you, listen to you and together with you establish our therapeutic relationship.A safe and trusting working relationship. Once we have this we shall be ready to start exploring deep and often sensitive issues. I shall help you explore your unconscious thoughts, feelings, and conflicts.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
