I work with adults and couples to help them move towards a state of continued growth, compassion, and self-awareness in a way that is collaborative, strengths-based, and empowering. I believe in creating a client-therapist relationship that fosters authenticity, support, and space for both acceptance, and for change. This can begin in our very first session. Together, we can begin to tease apart the adaptive approaches to dealing with and moving through life you've grown accustomed to, and begin to decipher which of these patterns are serving you, and which you may be interested in moving beyond.

You’re feeling overwhelmed and you’re not sure what’s wrong. You're having a hard time feeling settled and you feel stuck. You can't shake the feeling that something is missing. It must feel hard to admit that you’re not looking forward to anything. I know how unsettling that must feel. Using compassion and a non-judgmental approach, I help clients slow down and explore the discomfort. I know it's easy to ignore this feeling but you know this is causing you anxiety and seeping into all parts of your life. I can help.

Are you struggling with anxiety, depression, or difficulties managing school or work related stress? My focus is on providing a caring, non-judgmental and safe space for clients to share their stories and work through their challenges. I believe that there is no “one-size-fits-all” method to supporting clients, and trust the client is the expert of their own life. I also understand the importance of developing a collaborative therapeutic relationship and strive to help my clients to recognize their existing strengths, while acknowledging their unique needs, priorities and values.

On the outside, you look like you've got it altogether. On the inside, you feel anything but. Your thoughts are racing, disorganized, overwhelming, and you don't know how to make them stop. It's the bad kind of familiar and you can't believe you're back here again, or still stuck. Maybe you've even tried therapy before and it didn't work. I can help. I work to make therapy fit YOU and not the other way around. My approach is holistic, strengths-based, and grounded in therapeutic approaches supported by evidence and extensive training. While there's no magic bullet, personalized therapy is the best kind of help.

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
