Creating a space for pre-teens, teens, and young adults to explore the emotions that might have felt too heavy to carry, and too overwhelming to face alone. Whether your story includes trauma, anxiety, feelings of being stuck, struggles with eating disorders, relationship challenges, codependency, a desire to explore your own identity, or any of the many facets of life that impact us, healing and growth are possible. In this space, my goal is to support you in healing wounds, learn supportive coping skills, better understand feelings, and unlearn the patterns that no longer serve you, and instead learn to envision your wholeness.

I often find that clients seek therapy as a last resort, because they've tried everything else and still find themselves stuck dealing with the same issues. It's not always easy to identify what is standing in the way, but it can be reassuring to know that once you have, change is possible. I have had success improving the lives of those experiencing depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, interpersonal issues, transitional stages of life, and clients with a history of trauma and abuse. My goal is to help you build stronger emotional balance and cognitive flexibility by learning about what motivates you.

I often support folks navigating systems of oppression, intersectional identity issues, life transitions, stress and burnout, relationship issues, trauma, anxiety, mood disorders and more.
As a human being on my own healing and wellness journey, I believe we all have the capacity to heal from and grow through whatever life challenges we may be facing, have faced in the past, or will encounter in the future. But we're not meant to do it alone. As your therapist, sharing a genuine (not clinical feeling) connection is important to me. My aim is to create a warm, affirming and non-judgemental space to share, learn, grow and heal.

It takes tremendous courage to share your story with someone else. Hi, my name is Kamal, and I am a trauma-informed therapist with an area of focus in working with children, youth, and young adults. I understand the challenges that young people often face, such as, navigating friendships, school stress, and family dynamics. Every individual's life experiences are unique, and my hope is to allow clients to safely share their story in therapy. I am passionate about helping individuals find inner healing, and I understand that there can be barriers that individuals face to accessing therapy.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
