I aim to help intercept and turn life back to the preferred direction of each individual and their families. I aim to help in the manner the impacted family members wish with a client centered approach. If you're struggling with mental health, relationship, or addiction challenges, it can feel like your life is out of control and falling apart. It's not uncommon to feel overwhelmed, scared, hopeless, helpless and alone. Or to feel numb. We all experience occasional difficulties in response to life’s challenges, but there are times when we feel particularly stuck or discouraged and we need some extra support. It can be difficult to share your most private experiences with someone new, especially if those experiences have caused you shame, and we have a deep respect for those who are willing to pursue counselling.

I work with individuals with a wide-range of concerns and backgrounds but my main areas of focus are working with anxiety, eating disorders, ADHD and addiction issues. In my therapeutic approach, I aim to understand you and your world. Although people may share the same common symptoms, issues, and life’s ups and downs: no two people experience them exactly the same. It is important for me to understand how you experience things, so I can help you find solutions that fit for you. Together we will work collaboratively to figure out what is working for you and how to change the things that are not.

As a social worker of 32 years, I have spent my career supporting individuals, couples and families navigate through many life experiences from a holistic and strengths-based perspective. I believe that we all have the ability and capacity to face many of the challenges and hardships that arise in life but there are also times when we all need that extra support from a professional – someone to provide a different perspective, new insights, and helpful practical strategies to address and alleviate the distress being experienced and answers to questions that these times can illuminate.

Navigating life’s problems is like crossing an untamed wilderness. Unsure how to proceed, we venture on, stumble, and eventually make a way through. With enough time our uncertain trail becomes so well worn that walking it is second nature. Sadly, some worn paths don’t lead to the life we wanted. We feel disconnected from our lives, often irritable, in conflict with loved ones, and slipping into self-destructive habits. Making new paths can be daunting, yet doing so fosters feeling in control of yourself and your life, experiencing more connection in your relationships, and finding enduring answers to seemingly unsolvable problems.

“We’re all too vulnerable to face the hugeness of life alone. It doesn’t make sense to do that… we need each other” (Sue Johnson). I believe that meaningful connection with ourselves and others is central to our wellbeing. Unfortunately, painful past experiences and unhelpful patterns can sometimes get in the way. Relationship struggles can erode our self-worth and leave us feeling anxious, depressed, exploited, and alone. They can also create ripples that disrupt other important parts of our lives – our health, work, and kids. You're here because you’re wanting change. I'm here to provide a safe space for your journey to change.

In our society, race, gender, class, immigration status (and so much more) influence our experience of mental health and wellness. Many people strive to find care providers who are passionate about decolonizing and destigmatizing conventional beliefs about mental health care. Perhaps you’re one of those people. You’ve been looking for care that incorporates advocacy, empowerment, and a space where you can explore your identity, unmute your voice, and show up authentically. You’ve been searching for a therapist who will centre your experience, help you process traumas, and support you in achieving your most meaningful life goals.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
