The challenges associated with mental health are so real and prevalent in society. In fact more than one in five Australians will be impacted by some form of mental illness or condition in their lifetime. Grief, loss and trauma informed counselling, in addition to support for relationship conflict, and generalised anxiety and depression, form the mainstay of his practice. Meir is also a member of the ACA College of Supervisors and an accredited Counselling Supervisor providing support and supervision to counsellors and psychotherapists who work in all fields of mental health.

Drawing on a number of theoretical frameworks & approaches, my areas of special interest include assessment, parenting support, training and professional development, learning difficulties, behavioral challenges, trauma, depression, grief, anxiety, ASD and ADHD.
As a psychologist, I feel privileged, to observe & work with the difficult life experiences, which lead individuals to engage in therapy. I believe that therapy is a form of self-exploration & learning. In sessions, I use safe, containing ways to help clients process their thoughts and feelings, gaining insight and understanding, so that they can navigate the world around them, with a sense of confidence, purpose and hope. I help clients develop skills to manage their discomfort, pain, uncertainty and fear, to facilitate change in their lives and improve their overall sense of well-being.

I enjoy working with individuals of all ages seeking to think together about and make sense of their experience and how this has come to shape who they are, their relationships and their way of being in the world. This approach may be helpful for people experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety; difficulties in relationships; issues relating to past trauma, grief & loss; difficulties arising from childhood experiences; or difficulties with adjustment/transition to life events. I also enjoy supporting parents in understanding their child's emotions, addressing parenting challenges, and strengthening the parent-child relationship.

I am qualified and registered psychotherapist working in private practice in St Kilda East and online. My approach is grounded in a humanistic, person-centred and existential framework. I see suffering as an inherent and unavoidable part of the human experience. As painful as it is to suffer, I firmly believe that it is when we stop and confront our pain, problems or issues that growth happens, relief ensues and beauty emerges.

Life doesn't come with a user's guide and all of us struggle at times. In looking for a therapist you have taken a step toward finding greater ease in your life. Psychotherapy is about building a greater awareness and understanding of your patterns in life. This allows you to find a sense of spaciousness where, rather than act reactively, you can make more conscious choices and cultivate a stronger sense of self. If you find yourself often feeling anxious or depressed, held back by past traumas, not living the life you want, or lacking direction, then psychotherapy can offer you the change you need.

I work with adults and young adults to provide support through difficult periods, including anxiety and mood issues, transitions in life, relationship issues, identity and mental health problems. I can provide ADHD assessments to adults. I see my role and strength as a therapist as understanding the unique felt experience of each person I see. This forms the basis of our work together and the place from which we make sense of the difficulties that bring you to therapy.

The counselling services enable clients to gain insight into their thoughts, feelings and behaviours via approaches which include talking, reflecting, and mindfulness. I build a collaborative working relationship with clients, sensitively tailoring the support to meet specific needs. Creating a ‘therapeutic alliance’ is where clients feel safe and supported to explore difficult situations, and understand emotions, reactions and responses. The therapeutic alliance provides opportunities to talk through, find resolution and work towards making the desired changes to improve wellbeing while facilitating personal growth and development.

Bereavement Counsellors

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
