When families thrive, that is when society will thrive. Each member of a family deserves support and care where they are at. I work with people who want to put the work in, in a supportive environment. Most mothers, and parents, are trying their best but still coming up short. They want to feel more empowered in their parenting role, thrive in their relationships, have a meaningful life outside of parenting. Neurodiverse families deserve support, psycho-education, and guidance from an affirming therapist who knows what they are going through.

Hi my name is Thami and I am a qualified Clinical Psychologist based in South Africa. I have come to realise that most of the time, "people's feelings are influenced by their thoughts "( Aaron Beck). In order to achieve your goals, you need to work on the meaning you attach to different circumstances you find yourself in.

You are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, emotionally drained, you feel like giving up; you have to make difficult decisions about your life; you are uncertain about choices; you feel confused about your very own emotions; it is not a sign of weakness to ask for guidance. All these happen to the best of us. Having someone to listen, to reassure and validate is important to everyone. Let me be that person! Our emotional well-being is important to us and to our loved ones.

Therapy could be the breakthrough that you have been looking for. Life is a journey that has all sorts of waves and when they hit us, they leave us with either minor or deep cuts that we can not talk about with anyone, because of fear of being judged and because of minimal confidentiality. As a qualified Social worker with 6 years experience it is my duty to ensure that I create the environment that maintains high confidentiality and is safe enough for you to freely explore, talk and understand your experiences.

My aim is to provide an empathic and comfortable environment that enables you as client to engage in self exploration and self-understanding. Often, I feel that the challenges or symptoms we experience tip our lives out of balance. Providing you with the necessary tools and knowledge to regain balance and work towards sustainable change and a more fulfilling life remains a fundamental goal. My experiences include a variety of therapeutic frameworks (i.e., Schema therapy, CBT and DBT) and thus prefer to work from an integrative perspective.

Calling a therapist can, at times, be intimidating. But I hope you can take a moment to a deep breath to call and see how I can help. As a mental health counselor, I feel it is essential to create a safe space for my clients that is non-judgemental, empathic and most importantly, confidential. I find such a therapeutic space necessary because it creates an opportunity to explore more about yourself, which supports creating an aim to begin a journey of self-discovery and change. I have aspired to be a mental health professional, and I have therefore spent countless hours on training of being a source for your personal growth.

Life is a precious gift, however, sometimes we do not perceive it as such due to the challenges we experience. If you find that you are negatively affected by past, present or perhaps future issues and you are not able to overcome them on your own, it is a sign that you should reach out for help, which takes place in a highly safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment. Your mental health is a priority as it facilitates optimal functioning in other areas of live.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Psychologists listed in the directory are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The majority of General Counsellors featured in the directory align themselves with reputable professional bodies, particularly the Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners. All Registered Counsellors listed must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professionals.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for general counsellors in South Africa, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in South Africa.

Psychologists have five years training in psychology, have completed an internship over 12 months, and have completed the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology. They must be registered with Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Registered Counsellors must have at least four years of study at a university or college, such as the Bachelor of Psychology and have completed the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology. General counsellors, such as Supportive Counsellors, Holistic Counsellors, and Wellness Counsellors, registered with the ASCHP must possess at least an NQF Level 4 qualification. Social Workers must possess a Bachelor of Social Work and must have completed an approved internship in the social service sector.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in South Africa could be between R600 and R1,500. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are registered with the HPCSA and professional organisations such as PsySSA or the ASCHP are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client, or as required by law, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
