Life is not always kind. It is difficult to balance all of the demands of life while also taking care of ourselves. It can be made particularly difficult when these challenges seem to require more than we have to give. I believe that we all have the courage and strength necessary to overcome these obstacles, but that we all need help sometimes recognizing our abilities and learning the skills we need. I am a licensed clinical psychologist (AR 19-02D) specializing in diagnostic assessment and evidence based interventions. I invite you to learn more about me and my work at evidencebasedlr.com

Life and relationships are hard. We often try to manage it on our own, but sometimes it becomes too much to bear. Our thoughts become distorted and we enter into unhealthy cycles of behavior trying to survive. Making the decision to seek psychotherapy requires one to be both brave and vulnerable at the same time. Reaching out for help takes guts and I am always honored to be a part of someone's journey. You remain in control while I walk along side you as a trained listener who helps you to make sense of your experience and encourages you to make desired changes along the way. Don't remain stuck, keep moving forward.

Have you found love, but find it far from the fairytale you imagined? Maybe you're always the bridesmaid and never the bride? Or you feel like it’s Groundhog Day, same problems different day. I help women and couples find solutions. If you find yourself posing “Why me?” questions more often than you’d care to admit. Why can’t I find "the one"? Why do I keep fighting with the person I found? Why won't they just change for me? Why can’t I break my pattern of relying on work, food, or a few too many glasses of wine to feel better? Or maybe just why do I feel so alone and stuck? I can help you solve the mystery.

Do you find yourself becoming overwhelmed by anxiety? You may notice your chest feels tight and your mind races from one thought to another. At times we can be our own worst critic. Anxiety sometimes interferes with a person’s ability to connect with others or to feel safe while in public places.

Change your mind, change your life! You get to choose the life you want based on the actions that you take daily. A simple tweak in the way you think about life’s experiences can change the outcome in any given situation. When we create better thoughts, we get better results. I rely heavily on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) because I truly believe thoughts, feelings and behaviors are all connected.

It takes courage and integrity to recognize when we're not happy and to do something positive about it. There are times in all our lives when we feel there is something holding us back from reaching our potentials. We may have fears, anxieties, or other sources of emotional pain that seem to keep us from fulfilling roles in our lives in the ways we would like--in our careers, in our relationships, as a parents, etc. Psychotherapy is a pathway to creating the life you want by identifying and removing obstacles and working toward the positive changes you need.

If you feel like you’re struggling to find a sense of harmony in your life, feel overwhelmed adjusting to life changes or want to explore current stressors, therapy can be the first step in the right direction. I have experience working with individuals who are looking to improve and navigate areas of their life including general stress, life transitions and adjustments, self-esteem struggles and work towards a healthier mindset towards food, exercise and body image. I believe that therapy should address the person as a whole which includes aspects of both mental and physical well-being.

Healing requires honest care without judgment. In order to provide individualized treatment and support, I will work cooperatively with you to clarify your treatment goals and draw from a variety of methodologies to create a plan that fits your needs. My style is warm, open, encouraging, and direct. I consider myself an active therapist, combining experience, education, creativity, with a realistic and effective approach to treatment. To me, an individual should be treated as a whole, including the mind, the body, and the (soul/self)- whatever that is to them.

Weight Loss Therapists

What is the relationship between weight management and mental health?

Mental health can be significantly influenced by one's physical health, so overall improvements in one's quality of life as a result of improved physical functioning from weight loss can have an overall positive impact on an individual's mental health and allow them to engage more readily in everyday activities. In addition, many strategies used to manage weight, such as exercise and maintaining a healthy diet, are also associated with reducing the symptoms of common mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression. Individuals may also benefit from the improved self-esteem and self-efficacy that can come with successful weight management.

What is the psychological approach to losing weight?

While there are no specific therapy modalities specifically for weight loss, common psychological therapies can be highly effective in helping clients make lasting lifestyle changes. This may be called the "psychological approach" to weight loss because it does not rely on physical interventions, such as medication or weight loss surgery, to help clients lose weight. Weight loss counseling can be used in addition to or instead of such physical interventions. Some clients simply seek therapy to address the challenges that may accompany weight loss in general, including negative thoughts surrounding their body, disordered eating patterns, or difficulty completing daily tasks as a result of their weight challenges. In such cases, therapists will often utilize behavioral coaching or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to help clients understand how their thoughts may be influencing their diet and physical activity patterns.

What type of therapy is commonly used in weight loss counseling?

Weight loss counseling often involves a combination of therapy and psychoeducation. Common techniques used by weight loss counselors include journaling, thought diaries, and other Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies that encourage clients to consider how their feelings about their weight loss impact their mental health. Weight loss counselors may also teach clients mindfulness exercises, which can be used by clients during and after eating to be more aware of physical cues from their body surrounding eating. Some clients looking for weight loss therapy may also benefit from group therapy approaches, which utilize the power of social connection and accountability to help clients adhere to their weight loss plan.

Is therapy recommended for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery?

While therapy is not a requirement for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery, many individuals undergoing weight loss surgery may benefit from seeing a counselor. Prior to surgery, counselors can help clients decide whether surgical weight loss is a good fit for them and assist in surgery preparation. Post-surgery, counselors can assist clients with the psychological component of maintaining their weight loss, as well as help clients navigate any postoperative pain. Throughout the surgical process, therapists can help clients process body-image challenges that may come with dramatic changes in weight, as well as manage symptoms of anxiety or depression that may accompany the major life changes bariatric surgery can bring.
