We have an innate need to be in relationship. It is the very foundation of what it is to be human. We need to experience love, reciprocity and fulfillment. A healthy relationship considers the needs of others, focuses on patience and kindness, maintains honesty and trustworthiness and is nurturing. I'm a therapist who works at helping my clients restore love and trust within their identity and among relationships by essentially helping them become their own therapist. Everyone experiences violations in relationships and it's when we're without a restoration process that we continue feeling pain.

I thoroughly enjoy working with clients of all ages and backgrounds. My main emphasis is on a strong therapeutic alliance. I find this to be the most important aspect of my practice, as well as, the most fulfilling. I am a huge advocate of finding the right therapist. I believe this makes a significant difference in not only the therapeutic relationship, but also in therapeutic outcomes. I consider this environment best developed on an individual basis, with attention given to specific client driven goals and outcomes. Hence, I believe in the aspect of unconditional positive regard.

Are you seeking a space to be heard? To express without fear of judgment? A neutral party to listen and reflect? In my experience, listening is a skill that is not easily mastered. I offer the kind of listening your friends and your family cannot provide, as they may be too close to you and too close to the situation to be able to hear and see things clearly. I provide a space for you to be seen, and to learn to embrace your unique perception. You need to be heard in order to understand how you think, so you can see be clear on how you may be perceived by others. This will help you find harmony in your relationships.

You're looking for tools and strategies to live your best life, whatever that may look like for you. It's easy to get overwhelmed by life, relationships and stress. Sometimes it's a day-by-day struggle, and you never know for sure when a smooth stretch will turn into a rough patch. For some of us, maintaining good mental health is chronically difficult.

You recognized that you needed some help. Sometimes, this takes a long time to identify, get up the nerve to seek help, and then reach out and ask for it. You are brave, and I'm proud of you for reaching this point. Now, let's meet and talk about it. I work with people processing trauma, addiction, suffering, abuse recovery, depression, relational struggles, loneliness, sorrow, and loss. I work with children to help with abuse and neglect issues, school troubles, and peer struggles. I work with couples for premarital and marriage counseling and with women of all ages.

I feel that everyone has a need for counseling at some point in life. Just as we have physical health, we have mental and emotional health. If we check in with mental and emotional health needs during difficulties, learning challenges or traumas, we can sustain our overall mental and physical health. Yes, they do go together! I enjoy working with clients who are open to new pathways and perspectives.

My entire adult life I have worked with children and their families as a professional teacher and now a therapist. I easily relate to all ages - children, adolescents, teens, and adults. I understand how important working with families and schools can be for the mental health of the child. As a teacher for over 20 years, I understand burnout, the inner-workings of schools, and the importance of the personnels' mental health and self care. Plus, over 16 years experience with child-rearing, elderly parental care, end of life choices, adult social services, and grief and bereavement therapies for children and adults.

I believe that strength is not defined by burying our feelings, keeping your chin up, or other cliche sayings that encourage silence. True strength is being vulnerable, talking about how you feel, and yes, asking for help. If you are ready to dive into whatever is hurting you, interfering in your relationships, and whatever is keeping you from the life that you want to live, THAT is strength, and where your true power lies.

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
