In my 26 years in practice as a psychologist, I am frequently reminded of the importance of not being so problem-focused that one forgets to look at the person's strengths, which are the most valuable tools for recovery and personal growth. I started off my career working with folks recovering from substance use disorders. Understanding that substances are not the problem, but the solution to the problem, my focus then became on underlying mental health issues that these clients had. These were often related to unresolved trauma, relationship issues, and troubles with intimacy/sex.
