Visit my website (link on menu)! Accepting new clients! In my 15 years of clinical experience I’ve learned that much of the dysfunction, frustration, depression and uncomfortable moments in life are a result of trauma. Big ones, little ones… we are a product of our lived experiences. Some of those lived experiences left us with lasting consequences. Utilizing a comprehensive, but EMDR based approach, we can partner on a recovery journey which is evidence based proven to be effective in these circumstances. I also work with couples and take a diverse approach at treatment - including couples therapy and EMDR when appropriate.

Today’s world can seem overwhelming and exhausting to many of us. Sometimes, even getting out of bed seems like a chore. Anxiety can feel like it has a vice grip on your life. Imagine if you didn’t have to feel this way. It is possible. I have a history of working with individuals that struggle with addictions, people in the criminal justice system, and those who suffer from anxiety, depression, PTSD, c-PTSD, eating disorders, mood disorders, the LGBTQIA population, and couples struggling in their relationships. The therapies I offer focus on helping to alleviate the negative symptoms that can come with these battles.

"Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do, With your one wild and precious life?" (Mary Oliver, poet). I encourage my clients to aim for more than simple "symptom reduction" - encouraging them to develop the clarity of vision and the skills that will enable them to live vitally and fully their "one wild and precious life". How will You live yours?

“I don't try to use the same type of therapy for everybody because every person is different. First, I figure out what the problem is and only then can I figure out what to do about it.” Attorney Martin Kehoe said this about me:“Dr. Hoorwitz is one of the least pretentious professionals. . .and his humility is matched by his integrity and professional competence.... and he is the most insightful and helpful psychologist available to families .... and I am confident that families who seek his help will be well served." Feeling worried? Frustrated? Stuck? How much energy are you spending on things or relationships that no longer serve you? How much energy are you spending, day in and day out? Perhaps it's time to change that. When our emotional energy is being drained on a daily basis it can create significant vulnerabilities: physical exhaustion, irritability, anger, anxiety, overthinking, poor sleep, and sadness. It doesn't have to be this way.

We all go through struggles that may get us “stuck.” My approach is to support you in becoming “unstuck” ” I tend to use the cognitive solution focused model. I’ve worked with patients struggling with depression, addiction, ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, anger, relationships, phobias and parenting; just to name a few. It’s my objective to support you in reaching your goals at your own pace, although it may seem like I’m pushing you sometimes. I will support you in times you need to vent, but also shift you back to focus and teach you new ways to cope. I’m here to facilitate personal growth when you are feeling like it might not be reachable.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
