The struggle is real- for all of us. I am committed to helping a person grow toward improved insights and coping skills to resolve their problems and related emotions, in a non-judgmental and supportive manner. My goal is for one to learn more about themselves and to function at a higher level in the whole-person dimensions of their life. Whether one is motivated for short-term and situational concerns, or more internally motivated for deeper understanding of self and life-stage fulfillment, the counselor/ client relationship remains paramount as an agent of change.

Having grown up experiencing abuse, neglect, violence, substance use issues, and poverty, I have an experiential understanding of trauma and its effect on our lives. I believe that it is primarily through relationship that we incur mental and emotional injury. So, then it must be through relationship that we truly experience healing. My primary focus is to establish and develop a meaningful therapeutic connection with people in order to allow the wounds we have received to have the appropriate space and opportunity to be healed. I believe that every person should be treated with honor and viewed as a unique individual.

My focus is above all to offer therapy which empowers individuals. This starts with genuinely respecting your autonomy and right to choose your own path. Whether you're getting by "good enough" in your life but still find yourself discontent and aren't sure why, or you're dealing with mental illness (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma) which is beginning to unravel your relationships and your life. You may seek short-term symptom relief, and this will always be respected, on the other hand, you may choose to dive deeper to clarify and work on the root of a reoccurring problem. Either way, I'm here to help.

We have an innate need to be in relationship. It is the very foundation of what it is to be hu man. We need to experience love, reciprocity and fulfillment. A healthy relationship considers the needs of others, focuses on patience and kindness, maintains honesty and trustworthiness and is nurturing. I'm a therapist who works at helping my clients restore love and trust within their identity and among relationships by essentially helping them become their own therapist. Everyone experiences violations in relationships and it's when we're without a restoration process that we continue feeling pain.

I thoroughly enjoy working with clients of all ages and backgrounds. My main emphasis is on a strong therapeutic alliance. I find this to be the most important aspect of my practice, as well as, the most fulfilling. I am a huge advocate of finding the right therapist. I believe this makes a significant difference in not only the therapeutic relationship, but also in therapeutic outcomes. I consider this environment best developed on an individual basis, with attention given to specific client driven goals and outcomes. Hence, I believe in the aspect of unconditional positive regard.

Person-centered therapy, also known as Rogerian therapy, originated in the work of the American psychologist, Carl Rogers, who believed that everyone is different and, therefore, everyone's view of his or her own world, and ability to manage it, should be trusted.
My work with individuals and their families is based on a life time of personal and family experience learning to live with serious mental illness. I have spent much of my adult life involved in research through the National Institute of Mental Health, advocating for families and individuals through the National Alliance on Mental Illness and working with the most vulnerable populations through the Mental Health Center PACT program. I believe that everyone is capable of meaningful recovery through the pursuit of education, healing, and personal growth.

Empowerment for Life’s Journey: Empowerment has always been a special and meaningful concept for me. Empowerment is the process of becoming stronger and more confident. This is important especially in controlling one’s life. As a mental health counselor, my specialty, is helping individuals to work to remove challenges to achieving satisfaction in their lives. Many times we find ourselves stuck in patterns that are self-defeating but seem difficult to change. These may cause us problems in school and work, as well as in our peer and family relationships, and interfere with the enjoyment of pleasurable activities.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
