I am accepting new clients who are seeking support in their journey with mental health (adults, 18-65). I provide a safe environment to process trauma, anxiety, grief, life transitions, explore identity, and develop self-awareness. I particularly work well with university students, individuals who feel like an imposter, or those who feel isolated by feelings of shame. My therapy practice aims to empower clients to clarify goals and collaboratively expand their capacity to achieve them.

My work as a therapist has focused on helping individuals with a variety of challenges, including recovery from alcohol and drug use, managing depression and anxiety, navigating relationship challenges, men's issues, and codependency among others. While these challenges are common for many folks, I tailor my approach to meet your needs and goals that are most important to you in a non-judgmental and open way.

Rooted in a Person-Centered Approach, I draw upon strength-based Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Mindfulness-Based Practices.
I view therapy as a partnership and work well with clients who are driven to gain understandings of themselves and life, both autonomously and collaboratively. Every person has their own strengths, which can be harnessed to develop insight and change into their lifestyles and perspectives. I also acknowledge that everyone has their own past experiences that have led them to today. I strive to establish rapport with my clients and a space to feel safe and validated to foster a deeper level of empowerment, personal growth and self-acceptance.

My background and training are in CBT - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, although I employ a range of methods, such as mindfulness, relaxation, trauma resolution and motivational interviewing techniques.
35 years experience working with individuals and couples in Westchester, I practice in Hartsdale, NY, and New Paltz, NY. I work with ages 18 and up, adults and couples, treating issues such as trauma, anxiety, depression and relationship issues, parenting skills training and mindfulness. Making personal and life changes can be difficult. A skilled and caring therapist can help. This is an important piece of work I do, as we can never change others, only ourselves. I strive to create a safe, caring environment for clients. I also offer Equine (Horse) assisted learning therapy, no riding involved. Call for a free 10 min consult

Motivational Interviewing informs both of these aspects of my practice.
Crucial to my work is helping people to find what works for them; it's not always easy to figure out the best path in life or in therapy. If I can't be of optimal help, I always offer other resources. I establish a partnership and offer suggestions of alternative behaviors to try between sessions. My goal is not compliance with the suggestions, but awareness of the experience of either trying the new behavior or considering it and rejecting it. Either way, we learn.

I utilized eclectic evidence base approaches such as CBT, ACT, DBT informed, psychodynamic techniques, motivational interviewing, solution focus, existential technique, and other theoretical modalities by collaboratively partnering with my clients to identify and develop their personal treatment needs.
People seek help for variety of reasons including but not limited to finding effective and adaptive ways to cope with thoughts and feelings that are coming up now, but are from situations that they lived through in their past. Some of those thoughts and feelings could manifest in behaviors that can be problematic or and hold them back from living their best and enjoy their lives. Most people just want to feel content, happy, be successful, get along with their love ones, and friends and family members. I see youths, young adults and their families who struggle with depression, anxiety, thought disorder, OCD, ADHD, trauma etc

It is not always easy or comfortable reaching out to a therapist, especially if it is your first time! I take pride in creating a welcoming, safe and comfortable environment where you can speak about whatever may be causing you stress or anxiety.

My approach to treatment is to utilize tenets found in strength-based therapies such as Solution Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, and blend them with the more conventional 12-Step, Disease Concept approach.
In my fifteen years of working in the behavioral health field, I have witnessed the damage that unmanageable behavior can have on individuals and those they love. This behavior is usually manifested in the misuse of drugs, and often an untreated (or undiagnosed) mental health condition such as PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, or Bipolar Disorder. By the time individuals seek help for these conditions, most often there has been a tremendous amount of hurt, shame, and guilt. I have a strong commitment to providing treatment in a safe, respectful, and confidential setting where individuals and families can begin to heal from these painful wounds.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
